Top Ten Reasons To Buy a Dell - Notebookforums.com

#1 Post by Orbitz » Thu May 05, 2005 10:45 am

Haha...I don't necessarily agree with all the points but I did have to laugh just a little :)

1. I love trying to figure out if I am a Home Office or a Small Business. What if I am a large business run from my home? Yikes!!

2. I want to own technology that is at least 6 months out of date...it makes me feel safe. I think the world moves too fast. So I sure don't want my computer to move fast too.

3. I love a web site that requires seven pages of ordering to see my final price. I have nothing but time on my hands!

4. I enjoy having to fill out reams of paperwork to get the money I overpaid back in a rebate check. There is nothing like the feeling you get when you have loaned $200 of your money to a corporate giant for three months (Interest Free)

5. Paying so much extra for a laptop helps me to feel as if I have contributed to the economy.

6. I appreciate how hard I have to look around the DELL site just to see if the laptop has a USB port. DELL must figure that this weeds out the idiots from the rest of us. If I cant figure out were your specifications page is, then I am too dumb to own a DELL laptop to begin with. Keep that page buried, the strong will find it.

7. I like the fact that my Technical Support is redirected to India. They have such cool accents.

8. Great idea selling my "on site" warranty service to the lowest bidder in my neighborhood. I think it is very nice you find work for the hardware technicians in my area that are not good enough to find work on their own. In addition, I like having this person in my house seeing all my other great toys. Maybe he can set the clock on my VCR for me.

9. DELL does not give me a free carry case. Good idea. That is also why I bought a car without rust proofing or bumpers.

10. I appreciate the fact DELL feels I only need free technical support for one year. Why would I want lifetime free support? You think I am an idiot or something? If I need help after one year, well then I deserve to pay for it.

Or put simply, don't buy a DELL laptop.

Pretty funny stuff, even if terribly inaccurate :D

1. No argument from me there. Just buy from whichever place has the lowest price!
2. Not true at all, considering that Dell generally gets first dibs on a lot of the newest components from Intel, ATI, etc.
3. Better to customize than to dig through 10 pages full of system model types that I'm not even interested in!
4. Yes. Dell Rebates are notoriously bad. I've read far too many bad things about Dell Rebates to ever trust them.
5. ??? Dell is very inexpensive, especially if you can snag one of those $750 off $1500 deals they do once in awhile
6. Not true. The System Specs page is easy to find for each model and tells you all that.
7. Indian tech support is really hit or miss. I've gotten some really good help from an Indian customer service rep when I wanted to make sure that my Dell monitor order went through - he had perfectly understandable English. On the other hand, I've gotten ahold of some reps whose accepts were so thick that I could barely make out what they were saying. :?
8. Haha, no firsthand experience with that.
9. Nobody gives a free carry case unless through a special offer. Besides, I already have a good carrying case and don't want another one to clutter up my home.
10. Tech support should be tied to warranty period, e.g. 3 years phone support for a 3 year warranty.

I feel that most of Dell's notebook line is mediocre at best, with a few gems here and there. Build quality and input devices are fairly flimsy compared to IBM. That is why I stay away from Dell.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

Um...those were not my points :) They were from a post over at Notebookforums.com (title of my post). Note I said I am not sure I agree with all of it but found it funny nonetheless.

As for the specifc points, he makes a few that I wouldn't argue with...I do agree that the tech support being tranferred to India (although I read somewhere that this has been reversed for the Latitude line) is a major PITA. I just purchased a Dell Axim X50v (which overall I really am impressed by) but it happens to have a nasty little habit of frying USB ports...without going into too much detail I can tell you that my tech experience was nothing short of horrible...due mostly to the fact that the tech support was handled in INDIA and I had to make repeated calls to find someone that I could understand and who actually seemed to even know what I was talking about. Also, Dell's rebates are widley recognized (on the boards that I frequent) as being problematic to say the least (as are many other companies that I know about). Technical support I can't speak to from personal experience but can identify with his comment because my father had a similar situation...while his Dell was ultimately repaired, he felt like the tech that came to his house (4 or 5 times if I remember right) seemed poorly trained in the repair.

As for the others, I find Dell's web site much easier to navitage then IBM's...and with the coupons Dell pumps out (tho you have to do a good bit of legwork to figure out the whole coupon angle if you really want the best price) make Dell a fantastic deal for many people...as far as I am concerned a 700m for $799 after discounts is dam tough to beat for what you get.

Yes..it was just for fun. I was drinking my coffee this morning and something about the way that guy worded this complaints made me laugh :)

For the record...if it wasn't for my own personal total satisfaction with my T series I would 100% for certain allready have a Dell X1 sitting here insterad of waiting for my shiney new X41 to arrive to Bill. And I agree with your thoughts about cultural differences also being an issue...not in any way an insult just a different way of approaching things. I love the Caribbean...but I haven't met ONE person that lives and works in the region that makes it to meetings regularily at the scheduled time...they just sort of show up whenever...which is the island way. Used to irritate the daylight out of me...until I realized when in Rome....

I like Dell's docking/monitor stand, though I don't have a Dell laptop.
I guess I don't need a monitor stand if I get the LCD monitor.

Don't take it personally - Batuta simply cannot reply to ANY post without coming across as a really sad lonely argumentative guy. Just wait and see what he says to this post...

I found it amusing, if inaccurate. Hell, what's accuracy got to do with anything - GWB gets away with it all the time.

Wouldn't that be too low a S/N ratio?

Excessive quoting also produces a low S/N ratio...
