Does anyone use VPN / Proxy for privacy online?

#1 Post by hyde » Sun Apr 07, 2013 6:06 pm

Hi everyone, did anyone get a proxy/vpn service online?
With growing concern of privacy and ease of hacking & snooping, I have been hearing about VPN more and more.
I read about privateinternetaccess.com in a magazine, and from there I was able to find others such as Boleh and Astrill.

I used to sometimes, typically to bypass some restrictions, but not as much anymore.

I used to have a pretty sweet setup before I had a run in with europol. Still used VPN until last summer to get around restrictions so I could watch my favourite US/Canadian shows online, but it was too much of a hassle. Easier to just "find" them on the "web".

I just wanted to get one so I can use it while outside, or at someone else's location without having to reveal any information to network owners.
I am also concerned about the increasing ad trackers and webmasters cooperating with marketing and profiling companies. I just do not want the webmaster (honestly, almost all blogs do this nowadays, I am using Ghostery, and you would not believe the number of trackers it catches on a site that would otherwise seem to be harmless and friendly) to collect information about me.
Sadly, all Ghostery can do is just block the obvious information from being shared. It cannot encrypt the information, or hide the IP address.

IE10 allows for 'Inprivate Browsing' which I have found effective when visiting sites that love to plant cookies, etc. Perhaps this might be one of the simplest solutions.

Sadly, that won't allow you to login to sites automatically, keep history, use web apps, etc.. It does not keep any history or cookies, so makes most of those sites useless.

All the time.

I have a couple of servers in various places that I have OpenVPN set up on for exactly this reason.
Need help with Linux or FreeBSD? Catch me on IRC: I'm ThinkRob on FreeNode and EFnet.

Hi all! I use a secure productive private proxy server. I bought it for a little money on the website <edited>. This proxy server provides the highest level of safety and reliability.

Considering how you (AlexSm) and debbie30 registered just minutes apart using servers in the UK and posted to a two-year-old thread, while you may not be a robot, you are exhibiting spammer tendencies, therefore your accounts are being suspended.

P.S. Your username, email and posting IP is being reported to stopforumspam.com. As debbie30's is already there I don't have to do anything about that one.
