Is this a good course?

#1 Post by ganon11000 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 4:39 pm

I found this: http://kanduit.co.uk/ on-line and found the free course right for me, has anyone ever done it?
IBM Thinkpad A31 2.0GHz Pentium 4, 768MB RAM, 40GB HDD and a ATI 7500 16MB shimmed
Lenovo T420 4236-PA8: WiFi card replaced with a Broadcom one (fixes most DPC latency), 64GB Crucial M4 SSD added as OS drive, original HDD in a DVD to HDD caddy.

I've done nothing like that, not had any dealings with Kanduit, nor heard of them. I saw from their website (via your link) that the organisation is based at Hull University. It has to be worth a phone call to Hull University administration to ask if they have any references. If they've not heard of them then forget it.

I just want to know about Comptia certifications and career opportunities it provide. Does certification really help in getting better job. If yes, then from where can I do this course?
Bit confused, plzzz help

If it helps any, I've been a technician for almost 20 years and a sysadmin for 10 of that.

All with no certs of any kind.

I do have a Bachelors degree in Information Security, but I didn't get that until about 7 years ago.

If you work for me at my company, I throw you in the field. Sink or swim. I don't care what the test says you know, I care what you can actually do on the job, in the field. Rough? Maybe. But I don't have time to train anyone.

Check this out: http://blog.pluralsight.com/comptia-certification
It's a bit outdated, but probably still applies.

Comptia are just low-level entry-certs, only a piece of paper really.
The same applies to ITT-Tech.
They advertise a lot, with glowing references, but they are mostly a bunch of underdeveloped know-next-to-nothings.

Here's a little story:
I got a degree in automotive engineering in Europe and was offered a job to work on engine development with Ford in Canada.
When I flew to Canada, I first visited family in Vancouver BC for a month, to acclimatize.
I soon made friends there with someone who worked for IBM.
He told me so many interesting things, that I wanted to have a word with IBM.
Went there, got hired on the spot as a trainee, and have been programming on mainframes ever since, until my retirement.
PS: I completely abandoned my Ford job and any automotive ideas...
(Didn't really like to get my hands dirty! )

I told you the above, just to show you that achieved "paperwork" such as a cert, a diploma, or a degree, is not necessarily required.
Mind you: in those days employers wanted people with the proper interests and attitudes, not necessarily skills, as they can be acquired 'on-the-job'.

If I were you, I'd look online at job requirements for what interests you.
Then try to evaluate and broaden your skill set according to what those jobs are looking for.

OTOH: maybe this helps too: http://www.globalknowledge.com/articles ... ted+States
