So I had a very restless night last night. Im batching it with Uby and the significant other out of town.

As I was tossing and turning, it suddenly occured to me that we dont need an addtional 20k personell on the border, Hell we dont even need another yard of fencing. All we need are a few hundred thousand surplus Land Mines. One goes kaboom, we know where to look.

Someone was talking about digging a large trench, texas to california to prevent anyone crossing... however since we already cut a huge swath across panama, if we do the same across the southern boarder the entire country of mexico and the rest of central america could sink... or float away... so perhaps that's not such a good idea.

On the otherhand islands generally do pretty good with tourism so maybe we'd be doing them a favor


ps. on a more serious note, before we had electronic surveillance to go round up the illegals crossing the boarder we were finding entire families dead after trying to cross the boarder and not realizing that you not only need to be in top physical condition but you also need to carry an impossible amount of water to survive the desert heat. It's even worse for those crossing from cuba, they build makeshift rafts and try to cross 100 miles of ocean to get to america... I often questioned if cuba was really as bad as the government claims, but if you see what some people are enduring trying to leave that country... it pretty much speaks for itself.

The really crazy thing about cubans trying to immigrate is if the coast guard or any law enforcement catch them at sea we send them back to cuba, however if they get even one foot on land and they are allowed to stay.

This tells me our immigration laws are broken, however our leaders are clueless on how to fix them and the most recent attempt could ruin our economy.

pps. Some advice for our mexican members who are coming to usa... if they catch you, tell them to please not send you back to Cuba

I disagree. They are determined and persistent. If they get caught and sent back, they just try again. They are willing travel 100 miles on tiny boats packed full of people, or go through other perilous conditions to get here. Each one thinking they'll be the lucky ones. I think the alligators will have plenty to eat for some time to come.

What we are currently doing is not working. I dont think its fair for people who cross illegal to be granted rights, this month, this year or this century.

There must be some way to make it fair, for those wanting to come from abroad to "earn" the right to call themselves an American. I was [censored] lucky to be born a dependant of a Naval Vet, however given the option of going into the Military, or getting booted out of the country, I would not hesitate. Thats my opinoion and Im sticking to it.

That said there are tons of other "things" that could be used to earn citizenship. How about volunteer/low cost teaching? How about volunteering for any of 1000 charities. How about making a difference?

What ever we do is not going to be simple or easy, but why the hell should it be?

Sadly, we will not militarize the borders.

As much as I want a 30 foot tall concrete wall, land mines, razor wire, snipers and auto machine guns to man every mile of the border it won't happen.

1. It's too expensive
2. Politics
3. It's "in-humane" to slaughter people like that.

+ other reasons I am sure the bleeding hearts have cooked up.

Oh and the cheap labor pool. Can't forget that.

It's absurd to believe that a United States which is capable of invading several countries that are 10,000 miles away practically overnight has logistics and cost problems securing its southern border. No, the truth is that it's the policy of the US government to allow illegal aliens in.

The US is not the only country to have problems with illegal immigrants. Unless you build defences the problem will continue, although illegal immigrants will probably find an alternative route. IIRC there is little or no defensive system on your northern border with Canada, except at road crossings. If it is straightforward to walk across the border from Canada then won't potential illegal immigrants use the back door, so to speak?
You also have a southern/eastern border between Alaska and Canada that isn't guarded. Once into Alaska surely they are home and dry?

Many years ago a friend and I crossed the border by car from Alberta into Montana and there was one very charming chap on the border. He seemed genuinely pleased to see somebody, especially when he saw we were from Britain. Very different from the nasty, grim-faced officials at international airports!

Well said. Very well said.

We cannot ignore the fact that a large portion (I don't have stats at this time) of illegals are willing to work very long hours, in bad to very bad conditions for little pay. And they are happy to do so.

Take your average suburbanite kid, and see if they will work in a strawberry field or in janitorial services, or as a dish washer. These people do the jobs that no one else wants or is willing to do.

Now while I am very glad that I have strawberries and clean plates, I am not glad about one thing.

Taxes.

If I have to pay them, so should they. If they are willing then my answer is "Welcome to America." If not, then well, please leave so someone else who uses the roads, hospitals, police, and so on can contribute.

I know I said militarizing the border would be great, but really it would be a waste of resources and man power. No, the solution is to provide jobs and education. Yes we do that already.

I'm kind of thinking something along the lines of another "New Deal", what do you guys think?

It's easy to armchair politic (we all do at some point), but coming up with a workable solution that is within our resources and capabilities is entire matter altogether.

How about stopping to try and intervene in all those OTHER countries like Korea, Viet Nam, Iraq, Afghanistan, to mention but a few...?
Now THAT is wasting HUGE money, wasting TOO MANY lives, and NOT ACHIEVING ANYTHING!
Solve problems at home, instead of NOT solving any problems elsewhere!
