Likely the main reason why my employer - along with several other big customers that maintain the "must have a serial port" requirement - dropped ThinkPads while the brand was still owned by IBM...

Are you saying the ultrabay adapter didn't provide native ports? No, those were native. Ultrabay in T60 had a special connector just for this adapter.

All I'm saying is that we couldn't get these to behave in the field like we needed them to and were not the only ones...
Obviously, YMMV.
EDIT:what IBM had delivered to us back in the day were R5* units with an adapter that looked like one in the pictures. I've never tried using a T6x machine in the field, since by the time they were released we were already issued ToughBooks...
