My Neighbor's wireless printer, what should I print? *PIC*

#1 Post by mpcook » Fri Aug 23, 2013 10:03 pm

All of a sudden I start seeing a wireless "network" called HPJ610a.89315C which is apparently an HP all-in-one printer device. I have been trying to connect with no luck. It says in WirelessNetView that it is unsecured. I would like to "send them a message" say something like "This is your printer speaking. I have become self aware. Feed me ink." Any ideas on how I can connect? Have tried with Mac, Win7 and Win8. Seriously, would like to tell them to secure their printer.

I would love to be a fly on the wall when they get that message from their printer

Why don't you knock on the neighbour's door and let them know? It's a fairly short range device so there's not that many neighbours to check on. Good excuse to get to know you neighbour better and maybe offer to help them secure it over a beer or two. Chances are good they don't know how to secure it.

Well, I'm with Cigarguy to go to your neighbor personally and tell them the printer is insecure.

If for any reason you don't want/like to meet them, I guess you first need to install some drivers and software on any or your laptops/desktop/phone/tablet/whatever. You already know the printer model so it should be easy. Then print a paper with the prank text. (I'd love to see their reaction too :D )

Two ideas from my FB post on this question:
"Dave. My mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. Would you like me to sing you a song?"
and
"Feed me a stray cat"
Former from my brother, latter from my nephew. I have a weird family I guess. So far, no clue how to connect to the printer properly.

Again, if you install the drivers and the software it will do it automatically once it starts. I also have an HP, a different model though...

Why? I'd have a ton of fun with it. Want any ideas? ;) Besides, let them figure it out. Maybe after a few dozen pages they'll get the idea that maybe they should secure it.

Well I've installed the driver but cannot get a print job out without error.

I'm fairly sure you need more than just a driver. You will probably need to install the HP ToolBox, or whatever the printing application is called that comes with those printers (I don't own one, so don't really know).

Then again, there may be some kind of security code built into the software already. It just looks like an unsecure access point to the wifi adapter. :??:

If you don't like them, take a moment to photoshop fake bills, print them and then call the cops. Oh how I wish my neighbours had a wifi printer...

Yep, in my model I could choose a "minimal" configuration which included the driver, the HP xxx Series software and the scan software.

Once you run the setup program it checks for available printers in range (of course the printer in question must be on)

You can also run the "add printer" option from the "Printer/Devices" menu (or whatever is called, I don't have an English installation around)

Reply with something funny.

Then maybe a sheet of instructions on how to secure it.

That way you don't waste their ink and paper (too much), in a tight economy.

Just my thought.

I've always wanted to photoshop a coupon to make it insanely valuable and watch someone try to use it. You could even put a header on it saying it came from an official HP printer coupons program with instructions on how to be removed from the service.

ps. speaking of pranks, I know someone that was selling fake (gag) preg tests that are always positive and some army girl bought a box and left it out where all the other girls could easily steal one... that was a bit to mean for my taste, but I do like the idea of punishing thieves lol

Probably a troll, but I'll bite.

WTH is wrong with you that you would want to cause problems in a marriage with people you don't even know?!?

That being said, please go away. TYVM.

Actually, I had a great day.

TBH, I chuckled a bit. But then I thought about some of the drama such an action could cause, and it wasn't a pretty thought.

I may have over-reacted, but still.

Apologies if I upset you.

Mike,
Did you try using the IP address of the printer in your web browser?
The new HPs have a web service running which allows you to download the drivers.
Or even try telnetting to the ip to see if its a JetDirect card.
