#1 Post by BillMorrow » Mon Sep 09, 2013 1:44 pm

It seems the aussies (Australians for those unfamilier with "Aussie") had an attack of sanity and threw off the labour government for a return to prosperity inducing policies..

Bye-Bye Carbon tax.. good bye to faddish environmental craziness.. hello again to "2+2=4"..

Which would include?

I'm not a tree hugger by any stretch of the imagination, but I think there's value in the environmental movement from a wastefulness perspective. Less waste means more profits = prosperity.

Australia has been one of the lucky countries during the last recession ... it didn't have one.

Unfortunately that economic miracle has not followed its sporting success. Defeat by the British & Irish Lions in the Rugby, defeat in the Bedisloe Cup to NZ, defeat in the Ashes Cricket series, etc.

An abused child was asked by a judge who he'd like to have as foster parents and he said, "Australians ... because they never beat anyone."

With apologies to all my Oz mates.

Tony Abbott is anything but sane, Malcolm Turnbull is a much better leader for Australia. Right now Australia is depending too much on resource exports to Asia for its GNP, and this isn't sustainable in the long term. These finite resources will run out, and then there is also the issue of another economic dip in Asia, which will make Australia a miserable place to live if we are so reliant on resources export.

Finally, we need the NBN's FTTP and not some cheaper FTTN that the current Liberal government proposes. Investing in the future requires taking a long view and not some myopic view on current costs. If we don't invest in these expensive projects while we can afford it, then what is the prospect of us able to afford it when economy takes a hit?

The LNP won in the House of Representatives (lower house), but had a shadow-minister in a "safe-seat" defeated along the way and didn't do anywhere near as well as they had hoped, however they lost ground in the Senate (upper house), so "threw off" is hardly appropriate.

Its generally acknowledged by commentators across the board that the previous Labor administration lost government due to in-fighting, rather than the LNP convincingly winning it due to better policy.
BillMorrow wrote:Bye-Bye Carbon tax.. good bye to faddish environmental craziness
The LNP tried to make the election a referendum on the so-called Carbon Tax, but failed miserably on that front as VoteCompass made it clear that it just wasn't much of an issue with the electorate. It also seems quite unlikely that they will be able to do anything about it as they have a hostile senate to deal with, both presently and when the new senators take their seats in July 2014, which will oppose any repeal of the current Emissions Trading scheme unless it replaced with much better than the current LNP expensive/ineffective "direct action" proposal, which not even the most dyed-in-the-wool LNP supporters think is anything but a waste of money.
BillMorrow wrote:hello again to "2+2=4"
Based on the very poor handling of the release of their policy/budgetary position, less than 48 hours before polling, its not at all clear that the LNP is in any position to make that assertion. They have some strange voodoo economics position about increasing expenditure on middle class welfare and infrastructure, while not increasing taxes that just doesn't add up, even to most conservative commentators.

Cheers,

Bill B.
