Video quality confuses 700MB,1.4GB or 4GB ?

#1 Post by 123434 » Fri Jan 03, 2014 5:36 am

Are there differences in DVDrips Video qualities ?
I have seen:
  • 200-300MB
  • 500-600-700MB
  • 1.2GB-1,4GB-1,5GB-1,6GB
  • 2.0GB-2.1GB-2,2GB
  • 4,3GB-4,5GB-4,6GB(This is usually a FULL .ISO DVD)
Can human eye see the difference. I don't want to download the DVDs again...
but I must if there is a big difference :P

Is it like 600MB and 1,2GB = 2x sharper image ?
(or 2GB and 4GB = 2x sharper image ?)
1GB and 4GB = 4x sharper image ?
300MB and 4GB = 13x sharper image ?

Download one of each and see for yourself.

For me, DVD resolution is yesterday's tech. 1080p is the way to go.

Q. Differences in video quality?
A. Yes. Any compression algorithim, no matter how good, throw away some data in order to reduce file size. Less data = less video quality. Less detail.

Q. Can he human eye see the difference?
A. Yes, usually.

Q. Big difference?
A. Usually not. Doesn't matter with most content. But if utmost quality is your thing, buy the actual DVD or BluRay disk.

Q. Sharper image? 2X, 4X shaper?
A. Not so much sharper, as more data equals more detail. So 2X, 4X more detail, yes. The greatest differences can be seen in dark shadowy scenes. For example a grey smoke in a dark scene could contain a lot of detail, but with a highly compressed version of the same image, the smoke might look more like a lighter splotch with no detail.

I typically go with the yify 1080p option at under 2GB each. It is a low bitrate, but it is plenty good for my eye.

If it's a high quality torrent I intend on burning for archival purposes later, I tend to go with 720p at the minimum resolution.

That being said older titles will most likely be in a lower resolution, and in that case - I will take what I can get.

Leaving parameters such as codecs, compression rates, monitor size/resolution aside :
It's usually easy to see the difference between an 1Gb file and and a 2Gb one. Not so much, IMHO, between a 2Gb file and a DVD ISO.
Then there's a big difference between DVD and 720p... and above.

I dont really store or keep movies, so 700mb, although not that clear, is normally fine. For nature or space movies, I do typically use larger files.

YMMV
