I hope you are managing to keep warm.
I hope you are managing to keep warm.
The weather reports from USA/Canada are appalling. We had a similar vortex last year and it cost a fortune in heating oil.
I do wish sincerely that you all survive this dreadful cold spell.

Thanks killer...doing OK here. There is some freezing rain falling at the moment, as the temp is right near the freezing point. Monday morning the low temp was 7 degrees F, and the high for the day was 11F, then back down to about 6 or 7 Monday night...so much better today as the temp went all the way up to the middle 30's!
Could be worse...and I suppose it is worse in other parts of the country.

Well, the cold seems to be on its way out, but I've witnessed the coldest temperature I've ever been exposed to - thanks to the windchill - a couple of nights ago...
Then again, it could be worse. I could be in Michigan...

Re: I hope you are managing to keep warm.
being that i'm older than dirt i have learned to be prepared and foresightful (WOW, a new word!) and thus i try to be ready for the worst yet hope for a better tomorrow so i have an electric matress pad AND an electric blanket AND a redhead wife who gets hot at night thus i have it coverd (pun intended)..
also with nine birds we don't use the "one dog night" or "two dog night" rules.. birds have a body temp of 105 F. thus we have "three bird night" rules..
..
besides its only weather and sometimes its bad and sometimes, like today, it's spring, warm and quiet and time to dig a hammock out and hang it up..
of course killer is in the UK where energy use is frowned upon and summer is 15 minutes in july..
so i recommend a good irish wool sweater.. ro two..

In early January, I was outside for 20 minutes when the wind chill was -42 F. It was quite an experience. Even without wind chill, it was -18 F.ajkula66 wrote:Well, the cold seems to be on its way out, but I've witnessed the coldest temperature I've ever been exposed to - thanks to the windchill - a couple of nights ago...
My barber has been living in Ann Arbor MI for nearly 70 years, and he thinks this is the coldest winter he's ever had. So far in 2014, we have had only 5 days when the temperature stayed above freezing for the whole day.ajkula66 wrote:Then again, it could be worse. I could be in Michigan...

In the soft belly of southern England we get at least 27 minutes of summer. In Scotland they only know summer has arrived because the midges appear and eat them all alive.BillMorrow wrote: ... of course killer is in the UK where energy use is frowned upon and summer is 15 minutes in july..

In fact last year, following the coldest winter for 50 years, a high pressure zone came in from the Azores and sat above the UK for the best part of a month. We had blue skies, very warm days and cool nights. Perfect weather!
In the winter of 2013 my heating oil costs were enormous. In 2014 I have hardly spent a third. However, that's why we are frugal about using energy. Irish sweater, my ar$e, we champagne socialists prefer cashmere!

Winter 2013-14 was far warmer than winter 2012-13 over here in Norfolk, UK. Not had a drop of snow since March 2013. So nice!
