Why is my WiFi SOOO SLOOWWWW

#1 Post by MikesChevelle » Fri Jan 31, 2014 1:16 am

Can someone walk me through either some setting changes or hardware changes i can make??

I get 50mbps hardwired but on wifi Im lucky to see over 10. (on any device not just my t60)

I have a B/G/N WNR2000 router and a Surfboard 6180 DOCSIS III Modem

I have tested multiple channels and have it set up with WPA2-PSK [AES] and it is set to 300mbps in the settings......

I know that there is a drop off for wifi, but 80%???????

What wifi card(s) are you complaining about?
Have you considered getting a REAL router with Dual Band?
Yours being very small, with no external antennas, does not really help to 'spread' the wifi signal, especially if you are on the overcrowded 2.4GHz and you maybe "live" near many other routers?
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

So this is a router issue, and not a ThinkPad one. Have you asked on the Netgear Help forum? There might be some useful info here:

We do live in an apt complex so I guess that isnt helpful. I guess i should look at a more powerful router. I am only sitting no more than 10 feet from it.

You know Mike I was going to post to get the Asus RT-N66U Router since I got that model a few months ago and it has been great reaching the other end of the house. It uses three antennas and they are removable if you want to use another antenna. But since you are just 10 feet away from the router, I am perplexed on why your not getting faster data rates. I am sorry that I can't be that much help.

Did you at least try the DHCP with manual address settings in the link above? That was an issue with a Linksys router when I first got it. Once I manually set the DHCP addresses it has worked fine ever since. Don't know if that will work for you though.

With a potentially large number of simultaneous signals in a constrained area - your apartment complex - one has to worry about channel overload.

What happens when you take your laptop over to, say, the local Starbucks or library or other free wifi source?

This experiment might prove whether its the laptop, the router, or the environment at fault.

DHCP is a mac thing is it not?, as far as channel over load, there are 8 signals in my vicinity on channels no closer than 2 of the one I use......

No, DHCP is not a Mac thing. It's a standardized networking protocol used by servers on an IP network to allocate IP addresses to all devices on the network.

Still, you need to check with Netgear, because the router may need a firmware upgrade, or some custom settings to overcome this issue. They may already have the fix you're looking for.
