All the Thinkpads in my sig have worked without issue, other than dead batteries, and a failing fan in my T43.
Not a fair comparison. The Porteges are ultraportable laptops and are equivalent to the X-series Thinkpads. Ultraportables tend to be not as reliable as mainstream laptops such as those in your signature, because corners are cut to shed weight. For example, the X2* Thinkpads that I used to own were less reliable than my T2*. The Porteges from the late 1990s and early 2000s actually had decent to great build quality. Starting with the Pentium M era, however, Toshiba tried so hard to make the "thinnest and lightest" Porteges that they began to get fragile. The display lid of my Portege R100 was so soft that it had almost as many craters as the moon. That R100 weighed only 2.38 lbs, 0.4 lbs lighter than the X40 Thinkpad that I had at the same time. A couple years later, the Portege R500 dropped further to 1.72 lbs (for models without optical drive). Needless to say, I wasn't interested in getting one, knowing it was most likely even more delicate than the R100.

Well, back then many other brands had good laptops too, for example my Dell Inspiron 7500 is probably a little older than your T20 but it's still running XP SP3 impressively well, and it has not just one but two internal HDDs (320GB + 250GB). Dell, Toshiba, Compaq, HP and others weren't producing "craptops" until they started to minimize costs. Even their business-class laptops took a hit. By contrast, IBM continued to emphasize quality, which of course was why we all became Thinkpad fans.
Dell Latitude 7370 (QHD+, 2.84lb); HP Pavilion x2 12-b096ms (1920x1280, 3.14lb); Microsoft Surface 3 (1920x1280, 2.00lb);
Dell OptiPlex 5040 SFF (Core i5-6600); Acer ET322QK, T272HUL; Crossover 404K; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

I think that my collection is going to the end:(
All i wanted i have got. May be except W701;) And i don't know where to go next.

Couple of days ago i have noticed "butterfly" (701c) in good shape but without battery on a local secondhand market for $50, But... laziness, and collection border (no letterless thinkpads and no 16:9 widescreens).

I don't want to write them down to the signature of my forum account and posts but i can write them here from eldest to newest:
T20, S30, T30, A31p, X31 (waiting for X32 mobo), X41t, T43(-p), T60, Z61ti, (may be X60 will be resurrected one day), X61t, X61(with XGA IPS)(daily driver), normal T61, T601(other daily driver), X200, W500, W700, X301(waiting for final AFFS+1066fsb mod), X201t, X201(IPS modded), X201(WXGA+ mod in progress), X201t(in nontablet body mod in progress), T410(one upgrade planned). + some thinkpad spares + samsung NC215 + CF-30 +... G4 Tibook going to me (some day i want to understand power architecture, but i don't want to play with fruits;)

Better that i can to do - is to keep my collection clean and healthy.

Well, I can't seem to stop buying Thinkpads. My 14" T42P that I had for sale just started to work again and I'm putting a system into it. It still needs a new MB but that will only be $20 so I'm keeping it. I have a weakness for any of the P models. I've been looking at some 1920x1200 T61Ps lately. I don't usually like wide screen models but that resolution is interesting to me and will complement the UXGA T60P I already have. I just bought another T60 because I sold an extra one to a friend and now have two people who want refurbished T60s from me.

I am starting to approach Thinkpads as a collector because I can't afford my former collectible computer interest anymore, the Amiga. Compared to the better vintage Amigas, Thinkpads are dirt cheap, the market is totally random with prices all over the place. They also don't take up so much space. I have the ones I'm not using in a bookshelf. They fit in very well next to hefty tomes like old encyclopedias and 3 ring binder manuals.
I've got a T580, 2 W500s, a W520, an X201T, an X220T, an 3 X61Ts, a 15" T60, a 14" T60P, a 15" UXGA T60P, a 15" T42p a W701, and my first Thinkpad, a 770X.

I bought a T500 and T400 over a year ago because they were cheap, sturdy, and powerful enough. I got an X61 that turned out to be a piece of useless junk and is in pieces now, a replacement X61 which works fine, and a T60 I am in the process of upgrading the screen of, if I can get around to fixing it one of these days.

Ah, the Amiga. My dad bought one in 1990. I don't remember the name of it, but the game where you controlled a yellow Sopwith Camel that had to attack the Germans was my favorite.

The Amiga inspired passion then and now. There was a brief time in my life when my work OS was Windows 3.1 and my home OS was Amiga OS2.0. I was hired for that job because the boss was passionate about computers and the place had far more of them then it needed to function. When he interviewed me, he asked about computer skills and I told him I had an Amiga and I did art with it. I exuded enthusiasm and passion for a computer and that is why he hired me. He wanted people who didn't just use computers, he wanted people who were into them.

Amigans are creatures of passion which is why some Amigas are so prized. People love the computers they played good games with as a kid which is where some of the passion comes from. The name itself, which means female friend in Spanish, inspires passion.

Thinkpads have a lot of passion for them too but it is much more subdued and there are many more of them in both the number of models and how many were made of each model. That keeps the prices more reasonable. The Thinkpad is a success story while the Amiga, in a commercial sense, was a brilliant failure so it didn't survive and there are not all that many out there compared to all the Thinkpads in the universe.
I've got a T580, 2 W500s, a W520, an X201T, an X220T, an 3 X61Ts, a 15" T60, a 14" T60P, a 15" UXGA T60P, a 15" T42p a W701, and my first Thinkpad, a 770X.

Very well put. Quite a cult following these still maintain. I've never had the slightest interest in them, though. To each their own, as always.

I have been collecting ThinkPad for nearly 10 years and when I got every one of the Ivy Bridge ThinkPad I sort of gave up, as it was really expensive and I couldn't really keep up with the amount of new machines that Lenovo was releasing. So now I just buy the machines that i need, which are not that many.

The *30 series is a good generation to stop, as the *40 series has that atrocious keyboard without Trackpoint buttons.

Most would have stopped at the *20 series though. :D

I'm not a collector, but only because I don't have the finances to become one. :(

Well, the *30 already has that atrocious keyboard (if you find it such), but still has trackpoint buttons. :)

Since I made my last post in this thread in February last year, I must have bought 6 or 7 legacy Thinkpads, plus a Frankenpad board and a T420. So the collecting is apparently still going strong here, and the sale of one of my two T42 units hasn't taken place yet. I do however see that my collection has stopped at a T420, like I predicted, which btw, will be a decent daily driver for many years to come. For the newer generations (> T*20), they are fine laptops for every day use as long as they have Trackpad buttons, but nothing more. They have lost that last little bit of the Thinkpad "magic" that was still left from the IBM era. But now I'm repeating myself, I think I might said this before. :)

A few more legacy ones, maybe a 760, a 600X and a 340 will eventually find their way here too. No hurry, I am just waiting for the right opportunity to show up, and I realize I do need some goals to work towards in the years to come. The pace of my collecting did go a little crazy last year. When those are done, I might go hunting for a 700C and some old tablets, but I don't really have any expectations there. Particularly not on the tablet part.

I really don't think that this one needs any further elaboration for people familiar even remotely with my posts. Bulky and outdated, but still impressive - that keyboard...OMG - and will always remain my favourite ThinkPad ever. As stated in my signature: glorified typewriter, but a heck of a good one.

T43pSF:

It took me quite a while to get where I wanted to be with this system, but I am finally at the point where it does everything I need it to do while remaining an incredibly pleasant machine to use. A heavily tweaked W7 Pro install on an Intel SLC SSD helps. A lot.

T61

This one I fell in love with somewhat unexpectedly over the course of time. It all started with me acquiring a 08/10 NVS 140M unit with somewhat average specs, but in very decent shape, and with surprisingly good hinges. So I threw in a NOS LG Philips WUXGA panel. And a T9300. An Atheros "n" card. 8GB RAM. 512GB Crucial M4 SSD.

In other words, a ton of money. But it ended up being a great system for my needs and sufficiently powerful for quite some time to come. I've got one more thing to add to it, but will keep quiet on the matter at hand until I actually have the part in my possession.

Lastly - waiting to be picked up after the holiday season - I have a X301 coming in to take place of our recently sold T410 as a travel machine... If I end up deciding that the LCD is unbearable even with the custom profile created by a fellow forum member, I'll just have to come up with another "travel-friendly" unit...

And that's all, folks... 8)
Things have changed a bit around here since I've last posted in this thread...

A31p and T43pSF are still here, and will remain.

I've picked up a T50 motherboard and built a system around it, which made the well-loved T61 redundant, so it got sold.

X301 came and went. I finally accepted the fact that I just can't do less than 1050 pixels regardless of screen resolution. A very fine machine that one otherwise was.

I've spent most of my time using X-series machines but it's hard trying to stay just to the x-series 100%. The T60 is great with the SXGA+ screen for day to day stuff as it flies with Archbang. But while the I'm surprised how useful the X32 is even with flash video at 1080dp. But the X30 is a rapidly becoming a fav as its KB seems so different and the audio quality just seems better despite the specs saying there is no special sauce there.

I still do mostly because it was passed down to me from a relative, I've used the w520 for so many work applications (absolutely love esata, can't see why it hasn't caught on more) I've bought 10 of them and my dad gave me a few also. I still have some friends who get EPP discounts or if I see a good deal on the outlet I can't pass up. It sounds expensive but I get sometimes up to 5% cashback on my CC. When I used to buy the older ones on ebay for fun make sure you signup for ebay backs it's always 2% back, and I get a lot of 4x 5x promotions, so that's 8-10% back, plus with the right CC you get 5% back also.

Back in the day you could buy ebay giftcards at a grocery store (a lot of CC gave a high % for grocery store purchases and giftcards bought at a grocery store counted as grocery cashback bonus), use your CC to buy ebay giftcards at the supermarket get up to 6% off grocery cashback + buy all the stuff when they have 5x ebay bucks or 10% off ebay promo and you'd be getting some real bargains.

^ Nice find!

While I don't have a collection per se, there's 3 X60/X61 units in our family (one is a spare unit I'm typing this very post on), 2 X61 Tablets (retired, one with a broken hinge), two X220's (one is mine, the other is my dad's), and a third X220 under repair (my sister says it shuts down randomly, but I haven't replicated the issue yet).

Though I might trade one X61 with a T410 owned by a friend, because she needs a smaller and lighter laptop. :D

I pick up Thinkpads when they are at the bottom of the value curve to add to the collection and to have something to work on. T400 is the latest, T61 14" widescreen a few weeks before that. The older Pentium 2 and before are getting harder to find in working condition.

Somebody above mentioned Amigas, I have quite a few of those as well (A500, A1200, A1000, A2000, A3000, A4000).

Last week have got some Xx30 series (W530 and T430s) to make classic keyboard mod + try XCom2 game.... + SXGA+ X60t (beforehand i thought that it'll be too strong for my eyesight - but from the first look i have loved this resolution and size;) + one non Thinkpad - Workpad Z50.

I think this is the end of my collection. 70-series still have ugly keyboard (with ugly layout not compatible with my fingers;)...

PS
2 weeks ago one of my coworkers have tought me about Win+Pause key combo to bring My Computer properties.... and i have used to it... and can't do it on chicklet keyboard (Xx30)... they simple killing keys because the didn't know why it was made for????

Actually WorkPad is not ThinkPad. And it is not from Z-series. If you want you may read about Z50. I don't have Z60m only Z61t but main problem with titanium lids is damaged lacquer. So the main difficulty is to find TiLid thinkpad in good condition or repair lacquer coating.

There are many other ThinkPads that may be more valuable for collctors. For examle 8xx series (PowerPC based), reserve edition, iSeries (i dont remember the number) or may be TransNote.

Just got the UltraPort Microphone for the A31p, I didn't have the holder pieces for the UltraPort camera, now I do.
I might get the bluetooth adapter, but I have no need for a CF card reader, then maybe get a ZipDrive, SuperDisk LS-240 for the ultrabay drives I don't have.

A battery as well, but the last one I bought for the A31p was a dud after 3 months.

If the battery is completely dead, make sure that you remove it from the machine and run on AC adapter only, otherwise you'll be putting the charging circuit at risk of blowing.

I'm pretty much dead-set against using generic batteries in ThinkPads to begin with and you're definitely better off with a worn-but-functional genuine battery, since A3x series left a lot to be desired when it came to battery life even when they were new.

I'm wouldnt call myself a collector. I invariably buy units that are useful to me.

I have all the admiration in the world for a 701c Butterfly but besides being a museum piece, its useless to me.

In that regard, I have too many T61.T400 units but they too do not represent a useful buy today, even for as low as $25 that I've seen here because they have ceased to be useful really when I have T410/T420 units that perform the task better.

Also any machine with a 1,024 x 768 screen or 1,366 x 768 screen is useless to me.

I am not adverse to picking a curio along the way... eg. I might buy an X200 tablet if they turn up. But otherwise I have all the 'classic machines' I need.

I'll think about it, but I have a few floppy drives still working so it's not a priority.

I remembered your advice from a post years ago. I removed the dead batteries since. 8)
The battery was a generic one, which is why I think it died. It must of been an NOS that just died within the years.
There is a person selling some IBM era batteries locally that I haven't gotten around to bothering yet.

Also from what I have noticed, A31p drains significantly FASTER than A30p even with UXGA in my A30p and SXGA+ in A31p! Under the same aftermarket battery from Canada Computers after a year of abuse with maximum brightness (because the UXGA has the red tint and SXGA+ produces weird noise if not under maximum), A30p lasts 1.5 hours while A31p lasts barely 1! Same version of Windows 7 with same software configuration that can trick Spotify to think they are one unit!
Get a A30p if you live in a hot environment.
