Follow up on this.

I got a Retina MBP as a test machine at work and all the old things hold true as well. Also Yosemite has made Spotlight horrible as well and the machine isn't even remotely repairable if it goes wrong. Apparently the old MBP I returned has also failed with the black spot of doom on the display. Apple are refusing to replace it, unsurprisingly even though it's a manufacturing fault so the current owner is taking them to small claims court to enforce SOGA.

So here I sit, on a T400, now running CentOS 6 rather than windows. I've just bought a nice X201 as a portable machine and am doing a full hardware test on it under windows 7 and will be moving that to CentOS shortly. Managed to snag a new 9 cell battery for a rather low £70 on ebay.

Rather happy with the combination of a ThinkPad and CentOS so far - it is *incredibly* stable and fast. I've had absolutely nothing poke me in the eye so far. I've had to pull in a later C++ compiler (LLVM) and that is about it.
