General HP Question

#1 Post by Tasurinchi » Fri Mar 14, 2014 9:05 am

Short question: Does anybody know the equivalent to Lenovo parts lookup on the HP support side? My wife brought from her office a dead HP Elitebook 8730w and I wanted to check its original configuration. But if I enter the s/n or the part-ID on the HP site I only get a list of drivers and accessories.

I'm specifically looking for the LCD details.

Thanks!

Here are the specs:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quic ... ocid=13092
I doubt if they have the Parts-lookup that IBM/Lenovo has.
The p/n should give you the specs ex-factory for that particular machine.
Worst case: open the lid!

Thanks RBS! :thumbs-UP:

This particular model has the Nvidia Graphics, if I'm lucky it has a good WUXGA panel. It's not dead but it doesn't boot completely. It keep "trying" to boot in continuous loop. I'll open it up this weekend!

And if you are a really lucky, it'd be a DreamColor screen with LED-backlight!
(viewing angles like on an IPS)

Yeah, I've heard of those that George love so much...

But I don't think I have one, since there are no stickers saying so and I though they loved bragging about it

For some models (old ones only?), a configuration number decoder appeared in QuickSpecs. I wonder if this is no longer written for new models.

Speaking from (likely corrupted) memory here, so take everything with a huge grain of salt...

1) The nVidia card may very well be your culprit. If I remember correctly, these were swappable.

2) If the panel is indeed WUXGA, there's a good chance that it's the original DreamColor which is not IPS, but one of the very best TN LCDs ever, and should have wider viewing angles than anything non-IPS...very, very nice screen.

Good luck and please do keep us posted.

Well, it turned out as follows:

- It has a LP171WE3 panel :? (WSXGA+)
- Culprit was a bad CPU, switched the T9400 with a T7500 I had lying around and now boots
(brings an error message that BIOS doesn not support it, but at least it boots)
- It boots fine with a Lubuntu USB Stick
- GPU is a Nvidia Quadro FX2700M (swapable, good memory  )
- Screen is not very bright

Oh, and it came with 2x 4GB DDR2 RAM

I will keep it for the moment, I hope can find an affordable CPU

I believe the best that you can do is to Google up the laptop's part number printed on the bottom, which seems to always end in "#ABA". For example, if you Google up "LJ521UT#ABA", you will see that the first three hits are on newegg.com, microcenter.com and superwarehouse.com. All three links have fairly detailed specs for this particular ProBook 4530s.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

The T9400 is a 1066Mhz CPU, and the T7500 is only an 800MHz CPU.
Too slow, and hence the not-supported message.
Get another T9400 with SLB46 and 2.53/6M/1066 printed on it.
Do NOT get the ones (like many from China and other places) that have ES (Engineering Sample) in their description and none of the above Intel printed info.

Yeah, I knew that, but the T7500 was the only one I had spare lying around :(

According to the HP Quick Specs PDF, this model was also shipped with P8600/P8400, which are way cheaper, I will probably go for one of these...

You got very lucky with that. I highly doubt you'd want to send me that RAM? My primary laptop (which is my main machine) could really use it. ;)

Two cents if I may...

From what I recall, these machines had pretty decent cooling and their ginormous size helped...

If it were mine, I'd go with at least a T9400 ($20 or so nowadays around here) and *might* consider something as beastly as X9100...

Happy upgrading.

Sorry Temetka, I have also some TP's where I can use it :D I'd probably put them in one of my Frankies T61, I didn't make up my mind yet...
ajkula66 wrote:Two cents if I may...
Of course you may! I'm always open to wise comments...
ajkula66 wrote:From what I recall, these machines had pretty decent cooling and their ginormous size helped...
Yes, the cooling looks very well designed to me. The heatpipes are huge! The heastink of the CPU looks "normal sized", while the GPU heatsink is really big, (so are the GPU's too).

Last CPU prices I saw around here were $50 for a T9400, I'll keep an eye open, it sure won't be a X9100 (unless I get an excellent deal) since I don't think I will keep this unit too long. I need space for more Thinkpads and the footprint of this 8730w is huge
