Pure profit. Can you imagine - one wireless directional antenna on license free frequencies could provide as much as 60mbit connection.
That's what actually being developed by hobbyists but wifi wasn't designed for that. It works if there are ten customers in bigger area but not hundreds. Interferences among such close public wifi networks kills the whole "network" so the real speed/reliability is like the slow GPRS connection. Backbone connection among those areas is wifi again, not much throughput in general. Online video streaming for example is impossible at all. Security is another issue, the network can not use any WPA encryption because it slows it down and affects latency. It is not about isolated villages only, you can see thousands of wifi antennas on roofs in centre of capital city as well, silly ...

The only wireless connection that really works is licensed bands but the price is extemely high.

This is not a solution. The cable is.

With the Verizon MiFi, I got my bill in and its $110.00 and not the $80.00 It says my plan is 4G Mobile Broadband 10GB $80.00 Monthly Charge $.25 per minute. So are they charging me Time limit too on top of the data usage? I only used 8.294GB If so I'm just going to cancel this device. My WindStream is at 2.89Mbps speeds now still at $82.00 a month.

Charter recently upgraded our neighborhood, and with a <$20 DOCSIS 3 CM from ebay, we're hitting close to 60Mbps down now.

It seems the Internet is getting choppy again. I ran a test and get 2.71Mbps and 0.60Mbps Upload. I never reached my real bill 3.0Mbps Speeds. I canceled my Verizon MiFi hotspot as it was pretty much a waste. I told the people at verizon store I don't get real internet and need unlimited, So they called and let me talk to a Verizon HQ place and said they can give me a 100GB limit a month for around $1200, So after that I canceled the contract. My Home DSL bill is now up to $83.00 a month, Dial up NetZero $10 month sounds good right now.. Also the 2.71Mbps I still can't watch 480p-1080p videos without stutter.

Another bad thing is some games I have require online like I have Elder Scrolls Online "Now Free to play" Diablo III still demanding a connection "PC only" witch should be playable offline by now, New Star Wars BattleFront III maybe internet based.

Still no Comcast, not in area and it been over 3 or 4 months now since they told me they will come out. My DSL bill went up to $84.29 now. They keep adding a $1 more every 3 months, and soon it will be $90 for 2mbps. And I tried to get it lowered but didn't work and said I'm probably going to cancel the service. They just say, We're sorry to hear that, Is their something wrong? And tell them the internet is slow, And they say that's all we offer in your area, If you want you can get dish network and combined your internet with tv. (Witch is I still get the 2Mbps speed from them and get Tv from dish) with a larger bill.

LOL; I had the same thought a little bit ago when reading this last post. Although I think both you and I had mentioned this before. It got me thinking that when I retire, I probably won't be able to do it here in the valley; the cost-of-living being what it is. One of my major "gotta-haves" is that the area we move to have a good, reliable and hopefully inexpensive broadband environment. That, and easy access to the ocean and snow :) .

Well It's been a long while since I heard anything from comcast the day I talked to them and internet been going slower then ever this month 0.45Mbps Down and 0.28Mbps Up. Spending $84.50 a month for it now. I bought a Verizon Prepaid MiFi so I can get what I want when I need it. Are these better then the subscription ones, Never activated it yet?

I also heard Comcast isn't going to come out my way at all for one person. And I also feel like i'm on dial up every page takes over 5-10sec to load now.

Here's a image of my speed of today.
http://s262.photobucket.com/user/halfbr ... ..png.html And no I don't live in the boonies.

Every time they come out, it just gets up to 2.XMbps and never my real 3.0Mbps bill, and through out the month goes back down to this speed here.

Would it be better just to use my Verizon prepaid MiFi, I got rid of the contract one and got the prepaid one so If I need a certain amount of data I can get the card at store.

As I mentioned up-thread, I am using a T-Mobile hotspot for my internet access here at work. I can't attach a personal laptop to the company LAN so this is my only solution. I still have service from Virgin Mobile (Sprint) that I generally use in my car/away from home and office, or as a backup to the T-Mobile unit since I have an old plan that allows for "unlimited" 4G data (4G goes away in November). For T-Mobile I initially signed up for $30/3GB/mo. I'm now on the $50/7GB plan because "data always fills the space allowed". I would imagine that your Verizon prepaid service is going to be more expensive per MB than a fixed data plan. Of course the benefit is that you only paid for what you use. Which is why T-Mobile comes out on top with their rollover feature. You accumulate unused data from your monthly allotment for up to one year in what they call your "stash". When your monthly data is used up, you then tap into the rollover amount. When that is gone, you're throttled to a few hundred bps until the plan re-starts for the next month. I believe that you can also buy extra data if you need it. Rollover appears to be offered on their prepaid plans as well so if you don't want the monthly contract service, that might be an option.

http://www.t-mobile.com/offer/data-stash-data-roll.html

I'm very happy with their service. Speed here at work with only one bar on the Samsung hotspot's meter is 15.64Mpbs down and 10.38Mbps up, as measured by speedtest.net. This is probably the best case possible as another check at dslreports.com comes back as 7.51Mpbs/8.12Mpbs.

Using your map that you posted a few months back, I checked it against T-Mobile's coverage map and it appears you are in their 4G coverage area. I would say this might be another way you could get sustained service in your area. The only drawback is that you'll probably need new hardware (hotspot) with T-Mobile. They do offer a hardware check for compatible units if you want to bring-your-own so be sure to check here first:

So I think I'm going to just get rid of the windstream and keep with my Verizon MiFi, But I want to find a high end WiFi 4G box that has USB and Ethernet ports like this http://forums.verizon.com/t5/image/serv ... bl-1&px=-1

I can then get the data and connect my non WiFi computers to it and such.

Those Verizon ethernet ports are only a slow/lowly 10/100Mb speed. You'll want Gigabit ports!

That depends on how fast the internet connection is. No real reason for GigE with 50Mbps internet. If you want high-speed connections between local machines you can always connect the gateway to a cheap GigE switch.

Is their anyway to disable video Ads on youtube? I know you can download adblock but just want to know if their was a setting maybe. When I watch a video a ad video will play, sometimes the 3sec skip will come up and sometimes not, either way the add don't get fully watched anyway because the circle buffer comes up and then just goes straight to my video. So really my internet is so bad that ads can't even load all the way witch it just wastes my time trying to load a ad that I don't care for and can't fully watch anyway. By the way my internet bill is slowly working up to $86 soon.

I gave up calling Comcast and Verizon lost count how many times I called with them saying they will send someone out tomorrow or next and repeat and then get the line Sorry we're not in your area but you can be on the request list as we are expanding our services. Been waiting the last 12 years... I also read that lots of ISPs are wanting to do what Verizon is doing with that MiFi I had but with home internet and add a Data Cap and pay for data on usage. I hope not as Its bad enough I don't even get 1Mbps speed. If that happens then going back to the data cap MiFi for 2Mbps would be better offer.

I'm down to 0.10Mbps today. Can bearly watch any 144p videos on Youtube. I am getting tired of this internet. I've been through how many calls will the ISP to come out and fix the line and have it get up to 1.0Mbps "Remember I'm paying for 3.0Mbps" and then watch it slowly go down through out the month. Called and bothered comcast and verizon twice a month. Mad to see a comcast van down the road from me 5min away. Called 3 different ISP places I never heard of and not in area. And on top of it all my Internet bill keeps going up for no reason. current it $85.00. I remember last year I was paying $77.00

I am really thinking of going back to the Verizon MiFi but then I am at that data cap that I do go over. Plus I just finished downloading Fallout 4 today from Thursday night. It even installed from the 5.8GB DVD and then installed rest from steam.

Also My computers are using CAT6 from the modem to PC so I got the best you can get for ethernet cables.

That's worse than EvDo data on my Sprint phone with my $30 unlimited data plan. I'm guessing cellular isn't an option where you live, so if you're paying 85, you're right up there with the inexpensive satellite ISP plans, so that may be an option too.

Meantime my internet provider moved me from FTTB to FTTH and free upgraded me to 300Mbps (from 100Mbps). Too bad my wifi router (Linksys E4200, Tomato by Shibby, bcm_nat) can't do it over 150Mbps and yet I've no desire to buy a better one. Yeah, 100Mbps should be enough for anybody.

You are just fine. Now I am in a rural area in Bulgaria. I am getting 18Mbps for 30lv. And the television is from separate SAT operator - another 15lv. Not only that the connection is not very stable(wlan) but I am very mad, because optical cable passes half a kilometer from the village, but noone really cares or wants to provide an optical flare for the village.
In the bigger cities in Bulgaria you can get 100Mbps internet+TV for 15lv. It's always bad in rural areas. They are backwards in time.

Well, yesterday I watched a show on Viasat Explorer. They were moving houses. The problem is that not all houses are made of wood and carton. For example mine is made of concrete, stone and bricks. This is why when some strong winds come in USA, most of the houses are just blown away. But not ours here.
I really don't understand how someone could ever build house made of carton. It's not serious. I dont need do break your door, I just can pass through your wall with hacksaw

Same here. Even 100 meters from nearest building is either "impossible" or they ask an insine price like 10000 EUR for every extra 20 meters of the cable. It is hopeless.

If it was about 20 meters, I would lay it myself. The problem is that they will neither give me the permission to connect my cable to their optical link, nor they will provide me with service. This is a main optical cable, belonging to national telecommunications company(formet BTC, now Vivacom) and noone could touch there.
In your case, I would just talk with someone, that lives on the last point, where the ISP of your choice provides cable internet connection to make a second account with some pretext. Then I will lay myself a cable from there to my home. And then I will pay the second account. This is option too. The problem is that in the rural area I am right now, there is no cable internet access.

I figured I could talk about this here since this is my internet thread. As normal my internet is junk but mange to check email, watch youtube videos and buy stuff online. And if need to download a 40GB game off steam even though I bought disc it takes a full 3-4 days to download that size. But from what a few people told me the net Neutrality maybe going away and if it does all websites will be their own service like system. Youtube will be a entertainment package, not sure of Steam. email and ebay/amazon will be their own package as well and have to pay for each one on top of the speed you want to have for them. So it sounds like a cable tv subscription with packages. So basically this will probably suck even more for me since I only get 2 option speeds (Dialup or DSL) and my bill climbing a few cents here and there each month and at $90 a month now. If you been following this thread I think I started paying for DSL in 2008 for $67 if I can remember, as that's when I was able to upgrade from dialup in my area.

So if this goes into effect I would be paying for the speed and maybe even the data (claim I have unlimited) plus what website packages I want to pay for. Does this sound what is going to be happening if the FCC gets rid of Net Neutrality?

To date, the "violations" of Network Neutrality, both literal and spiritual - have been competitive moves that benefit the user.
Netflix, for instance, stopped playing games, and took responsibility for its traffic volume, paying to direct-connect with ISPs, rather than expecting customers to pressure ISPs to pay for "Open Connect".

TMobile implemented zero-rating for popular streaming services, both audio and video.
AT&T implemented zero-rating for Directv customers.

Most wired and wireless ISPs implementing caps have either greatly up-sized their bucket/allocations, or implemented tower-specific, congestion-based throttling, otherwise "unlimited" use. All four cellular networks returned to offer near-unlimited hotspot plans.

I don't see any reason for FUD here. I don't see bulk, general-purpose internet access going away, only new, cheaper options appearing.
In your case, if you're faced with per-gigabyte charges (or overages), Steam could "buy out" (zero-rate) 40Gb's/user of super-off-peak transfer.

Transceived bits may be cheap, but their value is non-zero; realizing, recognizing and classifying that value, however infinitesimal, is not a bad thing; it will drive efficiency and innovation.

What DSL service is running you $90/month, and how much of that is dialtone?

Are you without wireless options?

You have to have phone with internet. There is not Verizon or Comcast in my area. went through that for how many years of bothering them. I live in a middle of no where and the closes town is 5min down road. I have Verizon miFi but it is only 5GB cap. I only use it if the internet is running very slow and need to get something done on it. And that runs me $50 a month rather I use it or not. Theirs bills I paid on it with 0.0GB used on it. But don't get anything back if I don't use it, still full $50. I can't get rid of it or it will be $175 termination fee being it is under contract.
