Note, if you use Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows XP you might experience system lock-up after login screen since today, more here

I have experienced this error a couple of times after I started using MSE, even years back. I think it usually happened after a Windows update, so don't think it has anything to do with XP EOL. In my cases it made the computers bluescreen at bootup; luckily it specified the MpMsEng file in the error text. So booting into Safe Mode and deleting that file fixed it. I have vague recollections of MSE not working afterwards, so I think I had to uninstall and reinstall it.

Removed MSE a couple of days ago that was on one of my T23 systems and replaced it with AVG 2014. Got tried of the popup saying that my computer was vulnerable to malware. Well I know that. I'm running Windows after all :) .

The machine runs MSE for ages and it has never occured before. Also some posts indicates there will be a fix for it.

I have learned not to install MSE on Pentium 4 or older computers, because it slows them down big time. Avast is far more appropriate for these machines.

Consider yourself as lucky. It has happened on both T42 and T43 machines here, maybe as much as 2-3 years ago. Don't remember if it has happened to any other machines than T4x genereation ones, but specifically remember the file name MpMsEng. Very confused the first time it happened, as I rarely experience bluescreens.

I have been looking into this for the T23, does Avast seem to be less resource demanding than MSE?

Not sure if this is the same exploit but I just installed a patch for IE8 (on my WinXP system) that was released today: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2964358

Despite their previous statements about not supporting bug fixes for Windows XP systems, this latest flaw was serious enough that they had to do sometime about it. Obviously, no guarantees that any future fixes will warrant this same kind of action.

To stop the warnings from Security Essentials, uninstall it and replace with version 4.5.216. Don't allow Windows to update it.
Work: T42p (XP, UXGA IPS); T60p (XP, UXGA IPS); T60/61 FPad (Win 7, UXGA IPS).
Play: X1 (first gen, Win 7); T450s (Win 7).

Or just use another AV. There's loads of 'em out there.

I still use XP on all my T30s and T61s. The T30s will keep it, but I'm trying to migrate the T61s to w7, as I have noted elsewhere. If you are even somewhat careful with your browsing and have a good AV & spyware blocker, it's a non-issue.

I have a problem with svchost that I still have to correct before winblows updates will work on the computers (it hangs searching for updates). I might as well fix that, update to the latest possible and then turn off winblows updates for good on the XP machines. I haven't noticed any ill effects from not getting the update of the day from ms for several months.

I almost never use the internet extorter, so lack of updates does not concern me much, if at all. Firefox works well for me, although as other have noted, it is a resource hog.
