No difference for me at all.
I am just telling the member how to do it.
For me, I wanted to know some of the companies that made the components, not the country of origin per se.

Probably for the same reason it's so important to you to determine weather the fan on the T-43 is loud or quiet for the last three weeks.

Obviously aamsel was only trying to be helpful

i'm not trying to say here any thing , just asking why it's so important which brand made what. as long it's working fine and you happy with it, it should be enough.
When people finding out suddenly they don't have the better xyz then it's start bother them as well.

fan is different issue , it's a known problem. it's not "looking for a problem" :D

and who was complaining about aamsel ??

A "known problem" to some may be deemed by others to be no problem at all.

A "problem" exists only in the eye of the beholder

aamsel wrote:OK, you have received your Thinkpad, right?
So, you can flip it over and get the serial number, and you know the 4 digit Thinkpad model, like 2378.
OK, forgetting about the automated method, in which the Thinkpad gets identified by IBM's website over the web, here is how I always do it.
You go to:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... sLookup.vm
and put in the 4 digit machine type and your serial number.
It brings up a list of parts.
THOSE ARE THE PARTS IN YOUR THINKPAD!!
PRINT THIS COUPLE OF PAGES OUT.
You then go to:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... ea=SUPPORT
and search for each part's FRU#, confining the search to your 4 digit type of Thinkpad.
You will get hits like "LCD Assembly" which you then click on, and then when that comes up, what I do is search on that webpage for the FRU# that I had been originally seaching for. You will then see the manufacturer information for that FRU#.

The original parts information (that you printed out) will show two numbers for each part, the part number and the FRU#.
YOU WANT TO SEARCH FOR THE FRU#. This means Field Replaceable Unit Number.

If you find a FRU# that can not be identified, you search for the FRU# on this forum, if no hits are found, you post what the FRU# is here and what the part description is, i.e. Keyboard FRU# 39T0519 and hope that someone knows what it is.
Most parts can be found through a search of PC Support (the second link).
That's how it is done.
It has worked like a champ for me.

This can be found in the FAQ, or most of it anyhow.

I hope this gets you there, but you can post or PM me if you need any additional help.

So THAT'S what that pounding in my head 24/7 is???
My pleasure, glad to help out.

As for your sales rep not being able to find this, that is not surprising:
1.) he/she doesn't look for this information in a normal day.
2.) the IBM/Lenovo site is HUGE, there are a trillion links on it.

OK, first off...
jmt: thanks for defending me
danny_isr: you didn't offend me at all

Secondly:
I come to this forum regularly, because it is one of the few forums/newsgroups, etc. on the web where I can post without fear of being flamed or demeaned.
When I came here a year ago, I was looking for a notebook, and had not come close to deciding to get a Thinkpad at that time.
It was a much smaller forum then, but everyone was helpful, and nobody put anyone else down.
That is what I loved about it, and still do, and what makes this site unique.
Oh, sure...we still told people to use the search function once in awhile, but that was about it.

Bottom line:
I come here, and to a select few other forums, because I want to:
a.) learn new information about Thinkpads.
b.) help others or find assistance when I need help.
That's it!
I don't want to make others feel bad, or be made to feel bad.

I hope that this continues to be a great place to be!!
Thanks to Bill for letting me hang out here!!!

i just asked a question and state my opinion in general about this , period.
i didn't attack any one specifically asking that, and defiantly not you aamsel - giving them the answers.

so i don't understand why i got flamed/attacked here , it was kinda rude i must say . but oh well i guess that's the way it is.

I know you didn't attack me. You have been helpful to me. Some of your responses became reasons that I am staying with the T43, and didn't switch again to a T42.

I am simply suggesting to everyone that we make it policy to be as polite as possible. I aim that at noone in particular.

It was not just this thread at all.
There have been MANY threads over the past few months where others have been impolite, and I would just like to see this reversed.

For example, here you felt that you were exposed to rudeness. Rudeness is something that I don't want to be around here or anywhere. Let's do our best to eliminate it.

Again, you didn't do anything to bother me.

Cheers!

i wonder if other laptop makers provide the information that ibm (now lenovo) does on thinkpads..

like who made the display, battery, etc...

i hope the new entity continues to do so..
