Network Question

OK, I have a combo net work at my home. Wired/Wireless

Enters upstairs, via Westel DSL modem
Exit modem, and enters a Linksys WRT54G (RE-UP)
1 cable exits that into a 8 port EZXS88W

So the WRT54G acts as the router for the entire system. The system includes numerous desktops, 4 or 5 wireless laptops. RE-Dual, RE-JC, RE-N, RE-OUT and RE-DOWN (all encrypted). All of the RE's are wireless access points located somewhere on the property.

What Im running into sometimes is slow throughput, and then sometimes no connectivity at all. Normally it is temprature dependant, as the upstairs is on a set back thermostat and it rises to 85 degrees during the day. Is it possible the RE-UP unit is shutting down, based on overheating? You unplug it and 20 minutes later everything is fine.

Should I separate the router wireless functions with perhaps a BEFSR41 between the Modem and RE-UP?

Westel sucks. Big time. Wasn't always like that, but..anyways, let's start with the basics:

Who's your ISP and what speeds are you getting?

You have multiple access points?

Have you tried getting high powered antenna's to increase coverage and signal strength?

Our combined phone/internet signal comes in via an Arris TM602G cable modem.
I have one Asus RT-N66U router in my office downstairs on one side of the house, and one cheapo DIAMOND WR300N Wireless Range Extender (ca. $25 on fleaBay) upstairs on the other side of the (3,200 sq.ft. ranch) house.

We can go anywhere in the house, on the deck, and even in the garden with a laptop or iPhone or tablet (all wifi N), and get decent reception.
Using Inssider (http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/) to measure it, I get an average signal strength of 45-50 almost throughout!

When the speed drops, I can bypass the Router and go directly to the Westell (wired) and Im fine....that leads me to believe the RE-UP is slowing down the process.

You have a very good speed for a copper loop, so your problem is elsewhere.

My suggestion would be to retire the Linksys, and go with the Asus that RBS has mentioned.

A lot will depend on the physical setup of the property, as well as how much you're willing to spend to get where you want to be.

I forgot to mention that we also use a wifi ROKU 2 XD box to stream (always uninterrupted) television in the living room (wifi signal from the Diamond extender).
The distance between router and extender is approx. 35 ft. and between extender and ROKU approx. 25 ft.
