Chat

#1 Post by PandorasThinkpad » Mon Jun 09, 2014 9:00 am

Hi!

Had there been one, would there be one?

It would be quite useful to get fast help in any case of problems with thinkpads. It would even a good thing to change thoughts or ideas...and to change it quite fast and easy...

So what about inserting a chat?

Beste wishes,

Pandora

Since I've been here (mid-2006) there's been no chat feature and as far as I know, none before that. Will there be one? It's possible, but don't hold your breath. There is a phpBB MOD (mChat) that provides a chat function but as with all board modifications, any benefits it provides needs to be weighed against the potential of introducing new bugs to the board operation, not to mention any additional load on the site's server. There are already numerous chat services available out there (AIM, ICQ, Skype, IRC, etc.). If you really need to converse with some member here in real-time, PM them and settle on a common service to use.

Thanx,

i have no such messenger and so....and i just wanted to get it to an discussion, just like my other topic "avatar".

It wouldn't be bad at all, even to get an avatar, it could be small, so it wouldn't take much space....

So what are any other "voices" out there, wouldn't it be nice to be able to have an chat in here?

Salutations,

PT

On another forum that I frequent, there is a chat feature (they call it "shout box"), and a small box that lists users on-line at the time. I've used the feature a few times to give a quick shout to someone that I know is on-line at the time. But for general help questions, I prefer the format we have here already. That way all the info is saved for future reference or use by other members with similar problems, rather than lost after a few hours or days.

So, I'm used to this forum as it is and as it has been for years. Don't really see any reason to change it.

Same goes for using the PM feature here... the conversation can be saved for future reference. You may say that the PM storage is neither infinite nor permanent; you can have up to 75 messages each in your Inbox, Sent Messages and Saved Messages queues, after which the older messages are discarded. However, you can archive (download) copies to your computer by using the Export to CSV or Export to XML function located at the bottom of your message queues.

Exactly. I have no phone (I use Skype as IM only) for more than 13 years. No way back :)

I would love to not have a phone, whether land line or cell. The freedom it would bring would be very nice. But alas, kind of hard to make a living as an IT consultant without a cell phone.

I've been on other forums with shoutboxes on the home page... the big problem I can see with a forum like this- we have a smaller group of dedicated helpers and frequent posters, but an exponentially higher amount of people simply browsing to find solutions to their Thinkpad issues. The shoutbox would become a mixing bowl of foreign languages, extremely lazy messages or unwarranted gibberish, spam links and content, and other problems. A single shoutbox would probably also get rapidly filled with messages, even if all of them were legitimate conversation.

If we were to add a shoutbox, I'd recommend that only registered users can post in it. And people who want to post have to wait 30 seconds(kind of an anti-spam 30 second cooldown) before they can post their first message on loading the page, and can't post multiple messages within every 5 seconds. Even still... it'd need to be regulated more to prevent things from being messy.

I like the idea of a shoutbox too- but I can easily see it creating more problems than we can deal with.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

Well, the thing with getting a chat room is not complicated. It doesn't have to be integrated in the forum at all. Here, come for a chat http://stinto.net/jwls0 :D

Having said that, I am not into chatting either. Besides, time difference among forum users will make it impractical as well.

Which is why they aren't strangers but they are friends. 8)
I've met about seven or so people from various websites and have been good friends with them due to common interests.

But I agree with @Medessec about how the shoutbox would work.
There would probably be alot of random messages and bumps where people ask for help, regardless of searching at common ThinkPad problems.
I'd feel it would turn away some of us, or we'd login as a hidden user, as we wouldn't want to be pestered link searching with a vague problem.

Like asking a mechanic whats wrong with a car with only the owner's description, but not taking it in or looking at what it could be.

30 seconds though? I couldn't spam a few emoticons while chatting!

There's always Internet Relay Chat, we would probably have less off-topic stuff posted if so.
