Returning to the thinkpad fold, used to have a T60.
Decided to get another thinkpad, after two HPs back to back. I am now the proud owner of a Thinkpad T510 with nvidia graphics.
Ebay auction was for an off lease one, and it has an antitheft sticker on the back of the screen, how involved is the process to remove the LCD lid, i already ordered a replacement lid since i had a coupon for 30 bucks off anything on ebay, so i got it for free.
Other than that, i plan on upgrading it, it is a 4GB ram/320gb HDD M540 Core i5 model. I plan to swap over my 1tb HDD and 8gb DDR3-1333 over into it.
Are there any places i should look on the laptop for signs of a really rough life, or are these things tanks like the T60?

It's been my experience even well built notebooks can occasionally break and whether they do probably comes down to dumb luck more than anything else. The good news is the T510 is a breeze to work on and inexpensive parts on eBay are easily found. I've not heard of any major flaws in the T510 like the nVidia cards on the T61.
The sticker shouldn't be too bad. Goo Gone works well to remove the remaining residue. Isopropyl alcohol is another option, though not as good as Goo Gone.

The T510 is a nice machine. One of my clients employees has their own personal unit they use instead of the corporate issued Dell. I serviced it by upgrading the memory for them and installing a new SSD to replace the dead HD. It seemed to run pretty cool although I did not change the CPU paste. They paid for the parts and I did the upgrades on their lunch break. They seemed rather pleased with their computer and I liked the looks of the machine quite a lot actually.
I hope your machine serves you well.
With regards to the sticker, it should come off pretty easy with some goo gone or rubbing alcohol. To clean the rest of the case I have found the Mr. Clean magic eraser to work wonders on Thinkpads.

The problem with the sticker is that when removed it leaves branding, "STOLEN PROPERTY"

It can be scratched off, total pain to do, I had a T60 that had it, took maybe a total of 3 hours for the 4 days I spend scratching it gently.
It seemed to just erode quickly due to the age, the glue hardened to a brittle state.
Wouldn't know how well it would be on a T510, but I'd get a laptop skin or another lid if it bugged ya.
No one needs to know its past.

Part me thinks it might be kind of cool to have a "Stolen Property" sticker on my laptop.

Problem is the sticker also leaves superglue from hell residue. Ebay had a 30 buck off anything coupon, used it and got a new LCD lid for free via it. How hard is it to remove the lid?
Re: Returning to the thinkpad fold, used to have a T60.
You talking just swapping complete lids, or disassembling the lid to replace the cover?
Replacing the entire lid is relatively easy. Replacing the cover only is something I've done several times, and have grown to dread even the thought of having to do it again.

Entire lid = complete assembly with the screen included. Not bad.
LCD cover swap = a major PITA.
Good luck.

The 9 cell battery only has 75 cycles on it, laptop is in almost pristine shape, slight scuffs here and there on the bottom, but is otherwise like new.

Hopefully it doesn't have a SuperVisor password set.
If so-- your only option is to replace the motherboard or the alternative method which we do not discuss here (it would be too advanced for most people anyways as it involves soldering).

2x T60p, 1x T61, loads of 701Cs, 1x WorkPad Z50, 2x TransNotes other random thinkpads...
