Macbook Had Champagne Spilled On It. Ideas?

#1 Post by dwilsonfl » Sat Oct 04, 2014 5:40 pm

Heck no it isn't mine. It's a colleague's at work - public elementary school - and her alcoholic Mom spilled her drink on it. Everything lights up and makes nice sounds but no video on screen or out the port. As far as I can determine from research, video is on the MB, so any thoughts? Sources?

It makes an awesome door stop. :)

Yes, I did explain about my Thinkpads having drains through the keyboard. Had to. :)

Thanks,

David

You could try putting the laptop in a bag of uncooked dry rice for a few days to try to absorb up any left over moisture. You could also dissasemble the macbook, to find any wet spots, but I imagine that would be difficult considering how non-service friendly it is.

Have you tried plugging in an external monitor to see if anything comes up?

It does seem to be very unfriendly to disassembly. The spillage took place months ago so I don't think rice would help. No video on an external monitor either.

Thanks,

A full dissembely and removal of any power, scub that motherboard with water and you should be set.

Distilled H20 is preferred. While that is being done, a thorough visual inspection should be made on each component. Since the system was powered up after the accident, there could have been a short that blew out one or more parts.

Sounds like it needs a complete disassembly.
I'd love to know what how that happened though ;)

i would think either denatured alcohol or alcohol/water mix so the alcohol will chase the water..
make it evaporate faster abnd clean the system board..
you need to get the dried sugar off that board..
not that i, personally, think an apple notebook is really worth the trouble..
it might be better to drink the alcohol and use the apple for target practice.. :)

I think the problem is the LCD. You should have it checked with the service center.

It is likely the Logic Board. And not cheap to fix. And not ThinkPad quality either. Apple= proprietary and not service friendly either.
