Retrocomputing

#1 Post by Norway Pad » Sat Oct 25, 2014 2:17 pm

In a thread where we discussed Linux distros for older Thinkpads, I made an attempt to explain why I was putting work and effort into being able to use this legacy hardware to do computing tasks. And as I typed, the word retrocomputing popped up in my head. So I used the word in my post, and it has afterwards become a term for how I define my use of these old Thinkpads.

Today I was playing around on the computer, and I did a quick search for the word retrocomputing. And it turned out that this IS actually a term. From what I see, official Retrocomputing is aimed more towards older stuff, like systems from the 70's and 80's. So our old Thinkpads are a little too new for this league. Apart from that, I also noticed that there are societies, clubs and even events for this. Probably most in the US, but some in Europe are also mentioned.

Are anyone on this forum active members of any society/club like this, or go to events and meetings? If so, it would be interesting to know a little more about it. And even if the official branches are aimed towards older stuff, I think we are to some extent touching base with retro-Thinkpadding as well.
