The origin behind your username.

#1 Post by Saucey » Tue Nov 11, 2014 12:19 am

Curious where some of you guys get your usernames.
Are they nicknames?
Usually they are common, but sometimes our username/nickname brings out an alter ego when away from family or work.
I quite wonder what they are....

I always seem to pickup a new nickname wherever I go, but the first one had always stuck.

Sometime during highschool (2002-2005 ish) my friends were all video gamers.
We had nights where we'd all come in and play games, when LAN gaming was being tossed around for consoles and before online gaming became widely available.
Anyways, the most popular game, Halo was the one we'd all play the most in various states of minds.
Few of my friends had profiles in their systems, basically a username and your armor color.
I didn't feel like bothering to make my own, so I picked default which picks a random nickname, some of us did this, while others pick a taken name and play either better or worse than the original player.

Anyways, I liked the name Caboose and Saucy from that game, since most of my friends in that group weren't as skilled as me and a few others, I'd play better on purpose with those two names.
I eventually chose Saucey out of the two when it came to making a profiles and user accounts to various games or websites.
Most of my friends would call each other our gamer names during school or when hanging out.

The rise of Myspace would add to that as well, as quite a few of us had some sort of alter ego that came from that because we would be 'famous' for having a lot of comments or likes (or hearts, idk) from our profile or photos.
There was the option of having your own URL as well, it was our way of claiming land.

It was my unnoficial rave name when it came to going to underground events.
Rave culture is very different, quite surprised how hippie-ish it felt, not surprised how illegal it was, but again, nickname provided to be useful.
Hell if it wasn't for facebook, quite of bit us wouldn't of known our real names, we'd all have nicknames.

Years has passed since then, but the names are still being said by the few at parties.
It piques interest to those who doesn't know about the history. Probably best not to say that name if that person is dating someone who is yet to hear it. 8)
But it fun to rouse a friend for more drinking by chanting it.

My story is much simpler, my first and favorite ThinkPad ever was a 600X, hence my name.

Nothing sinister in my case. Killer has been my nickname since I was very young. It is a shortened version of my surname. :)

KHIPATA is my nickname and in Georgian it means "a person, mostly guy, prone to accidents and trouble", but not trouble of criminal nature :)

I've gone by several usernames in the past, but "that1nerd" was inspired by a PSN name that I saw a while back. They called themselves "that1pirate", and I remember the conversations that would ensue in-game over mic chat.

"What the *expletive*?! That1Pirate just no-scoped me!"
"What pirate?"
"That1Pirate!"
"Dude, you're playing Battlefield. There aren't any pirates in this game."

So, I went with "that1nerd", in a vain attempt to capture the pure genius of said username, but I've yet to get anyone riled up enough to start shouting my name.

Just the nickname I've carried from my stunt filled youth. For the forum I dropped the "The amazing but somewhat foolish" part.

Ever ride a hood off a 1967 Corvair towed 20 feet behind a 4X4 on a highway in a snowstorm? How about a cabin door towed behind a motorboat? Yeah...I got stories...

I still do my own stunts, but I've decided that computers aren't as painful when something goes not quite right.

My name has no root meaning or trace original term. It's not an English word either or composition of one or more other words. It is -in a sense- completely made up.

I made it up when I was really little, 9 years old I think. I was naming a monster or creature I drew up for a school project, and it's original spelling was "Meddessecc". When I turned 13 and opened my YouTube account, I had recently gone through all my old school stuff and discovered it shortly before doing this, and I registered with the name, respelling it as it is now, "Medessec". From there I've started using it as my internet tag for everything.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

My user name is pretty self explaining and simple compared to the rest of you guys. Just a play on words on the name of the country I'm originally from, and Thinkpad. It was in fact created in a hurry when I registered here to ask a question about my Thinkpad once upon a time. It would probably have been a different user name if I had registered today, but I don't put much thoughts into it.

Edit: "Once upon a time" appears to be only 5 years ago.. I was sure I became a member when I bought my T43 in 2007, but the passage of time seems to sometimes play a trick on me.

Back in the late 90s I found Fighter Ace II on the MSN Gaming Zone - my first online gaming experience. Creating an account to play online with, I wanted a screen name that sounded intimidating - so I tried "terminator" and "theterminator". Both were taken, naturally, but the server came back with a few auto-generated suggestions, so I took theterminator93. Through the years since I've joined many sites and made many accounts, and I just started to use it everywhere it's publicly visible... and it's stuck for the 17 years or so since I first started using it.

I've had a few online usernames in the past, but my current one is definitely the best.

"Mr. Maguire" is often what I'm called instead of my first name. In school, the staff in the technology department called me that pretty much exclusively. Sometimes I'm called that by friends and family too.

I wish I could have the name MrMaguire on YouTube. Unfortunately somebody snagged that - just like every other good username - back in 2006.

Funny place YT indeed is.

There's an "ajkula66" over there who has absolutely nothing to do with silly old me, apart from the fact that both of us originated in somewhat similar neck of the woods, but we differ on basis of both nationality and religion.
