IBM System X3200 Graphics card install

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Wed Nov 12, 2014 4:18 am

I have my IBM X server X3200 and is the only PC that I have that has 64-bit support. It has a 16GB RAM Max with a Intel Xeon and a install of Windows 7 64-bit, could of installed my copy of Windows 8 64-bit but like 7 better. I want to play some modern games even if its set to low settings and my 32-bit desktop isnt going to support these new required 64-bit PC games. Im looking to get a basic graphics card. On the motherboard it has 3 normal PCI slots, 1 Mini PCIE x1 slot and one PCIE x8. No long PCEI x16. Is their a graphics card that can fit into this slot? Mine is the small black slot next to a normal PCI x16 slot. http://www.phoronix.net/image.php?id=ty ... _expansion

The actual board in the tower and case: http://cdn2.bigcommerce.com/server900/b ... 80.jpg?c=2

I got this for about $130 a few years ago and I guess they normally went for $3000 new. Its very heavy compared to a normal tower desktop and is built very solid.

I may be off base here, but the 32/64 bit games have little to do with the graphics card. The type interface PCI/PCI-e (x1, x8 or x16) only corresponds to the speed at which data can be sent. Tell us what the game requires GPU wise, and we can tell you what will work.

Now, all of the above is in general.
For example: 32 vs 64 bit. Think 3.2 beer vs 190 proof Everclear. Both will knock you off your feet, but in a different way.
PCI vs PCI-Ex16. Think draining a water tower with a 1/2 inch water hose versus an 8 inch pipe (volume)

32/64 bit vs PCI-Ex16 Think Everclear vs 8 inch pipe.....cant really compare the two directly.

YMMV

For now its the Evil Within. Recommended Requires a Windows 7/8 64-bit OS, GeForce GTX 670 or equivalent with 4GBs of VRAM, 50GB HD space.

Minimum
CPU: Core-i7 or an equivalent 4+ core processor
CPU Speed: Info
RAM: 4 GB
OS: Windows 7/8.1
Video Card: GeForce GTX 460 or an equivalent 1GB VRAM card
Free Disk Space: 50 GB

My main desktop:
IBM ThinkCentre A50p, Windows XP Professional 40GB HDD, 1TB 2nd SATA HDD, 4GB RAM Max, Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHz, Nvidia GeForce 6200 512MB DDR2.
The Upgrade motherboard to go into A50p, still getting parts for it. IBM/Lenovo ThinkCentre M81 Tower board. Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM Max and probably get a Nvidia GeForce 690

This is for reference:

Now work out the interface you need, PCI/PCI-e. Keeping in mind, the faster you can use, the better it will look.
