Who still uses a IBM ThinkPad as their daily?
Re: Who still uses a IBM ThinkPad as their daily?
Well I have used ThinkPads as my only PC since around 1998 with the 760XL.
Now on an X200s maxed out at 8GB with a 1400x900 LED display that serves as my main machine as I am now on the move a lot and don't have a base as such. My old T500 with extended battery weighed way too much and was huge in comparison. Also not much money at the moment so a few models behind (never bothered me).
In my time have used many machines but those that stick on my mind are the 760XL, 770, T30, X31/X40 and the T43p.
Those machines were used on a daily basis worldwide in my profession as an International IT Consultant for a big Corporation. They all served me well (apart from a 1.8" Disk failure within days on the X40, never liked that they didn't use standard disks...)
Also owned X23/24/32, A21p, A30p, A31p, 600X, 240, T22, T23 (also a classic), T40/1/2/3, X60(s?), T60 and likely a few I can't remember.
I often thought that ThinkPads would turn ugly after the takeover (basically any machine after the T43p) but I was wrong.. typing this on a T500 (WSXGA+) which has been a superb T43p UXGA replacement for me.
I'll never move from ThinkPads. I'm in my early 40's now and see myself using them for the rest of my life.

Just installed a 80GB HDD into the 2nd bay slot and installed Windows 7 with dual select boot of the original Windows XP Pro or Windows 7 now. I read that this will be the last windows to go up too.

Well, you can also go to Windows 8.1, which tends to have better performance and security, but is not easy to get used to.

I think it puts the 'subjective' in 'subjective!'brchan wrote:Well, you can also go to Windows 8.1, which tends to have better performance and security, but is not easy to get used to.
Personally I do not have any issues with W8.1 although I can see how it would be a nuisance for others. I am sort of a proverbial swiss-army-OS gal (if there ever was one) now with Xfce, W7, W8.1, and ChromeOS on my laptops/desktop

No Windows 8 will not install on a Pentium 4 unless its the last Pentium 4 like for my ThinkCentre M51 witch has a Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHz Its a prescott P4 that can run Windows 8/8.1

There is a way to bypass Win8.1 processor control and install it on some older machines - I did succeeded to install it on A31p which has an P4M installed.ThinkPad560X wrote:No Windows 8 will not install on a Pentium 4 unless its the last Pentium 4 like for my ThinkCentre M51 witch has a Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHz Its a prescott P4 that can run Windows 8/8.1

Re: Who still uses a IBM ThinkPad as their daily?
I feel like I'm interrupting by returning to the theme of the thread!
I still use my 390X all day, some workdays, if I'm writing. I have a pseudo-NAS (it's an android TV stick with a 2TB drive attached) running Bittorrent sync as my self-hosted dropbox, so that I can make changes to my files from any machine on any particular day.
But if I have multimedia or web-related work to do, I have to use something else.

Re: Who still uses a IBM ThinkPad as their daily?
For the Windows 8 Upgrade. I ran the Windows 8 upgrade advisor on my IBM ThinkCentre S50 Ultrasmall witch I threw a IBM 6GB HDD in it along time ago and installed XP Pro on it. I ran the advisor and the only error that came up was This PC doesn't meet Windows 8 requirments [X] Windows 8 needs a 20GB HDD space witch I know that it would need a bigger drive, but didnt bring anymore errors up. Its specs. Intel Celeron D 2.80GHz 2GB RAM Maxd, Intel Extreme Graphics, CD/RW/DVD-ROM and the thrown in 6GB HDD.

+1 very interesting...ajkula66 wrote: Details, pretty please?
AFAIK - main requirement for Win8+ was EDB (NX bit) and PAE extensions of CPU. From Prescott family P4 based CPUs can have EDB extensions. Celeron D can have this from Cedar Mill family.ThinkPad560X wrote:Its specs. Intel Celeron D 2.80GHz 2GB RAM Maxd, Intel Extreme Graphics, CD/RW/DVD-ROM and the thrown in 6GB HDD.
This problem (No EDB extension in CPU) plagues T40-T42 thinkpads because Pentium-M have got EDB only with Dothan core - in T43 Thinkpad - which was made for Lenovo
Yes some T60 have IBM bage on it's bottom, but boot splash screen showing "Lenovo" sign:(

ajkula66 I'll try to help you as much as I can at this moment (my wife designated me 100 top-priority tasks in pre-christmas time and I am in lack of time). Please try to follow guide described at http://winclub.pl/topic/320-install-win ... 2-support/. I't worked for me twice. I'll try to make a proper guide @ forum after christmas time.ajkula66 wrote:Details, pretty please?
