Open LunchBox Thinkpad Replacement
Open LunchBox Thinkpad Replacement
Open LunchBox is an Open Laptop Design replacement. Please see the Phronix article here:

They are in the design stages right now. So if you want to see a feature let them know.
I've given my wish list. Essentially a 3:2/16:10 Thinkpo W500 replacement.
There are a lot of smart people in this group. Let your voices be heard.

Re: Open LunchBox Thinkpad Replacement
I certainly hope they manage to produce something but it sounds like they'll be limited to mostly mainstream-equivalent designs by the AMD CPU. Unlikely we'll see a competitive workstation-class system and probably not a decent ultraportable either.
Current Thinkpads:
X31, X40, X61T, X61, X201, X220 (i7 IPS), W520 (2720QM/2000M/FHD), T440p (i7-4800MQ/GF730GT/FHD)
Dells: Latitude C840, Precision M70, Precision M4400, M6400 (WUXGA), M6600, M6700
Daily driver: Dell XPS 13 w/Kaby Lake+Iris Pro+TB3

Re: Open LunchBox Thinkpad Replacement
Nice idea, but will probably never happen. AMD ARM64 CPUs are still 2 years away. I'll put this under the same category as the Neo900, something to bookmark and check into every 6 months or so.
I see that they too, are trying a community-driven smartphone. Neo900 hasn't done it after 3 years, and they are only changing out the motherboard while keeping the N900 design. The only successful product in this crowdsourced category is Jolla, and they started out with all of Nokia's employees and huge amounts of capital.

.: Lenovo X250 - 16GB, 500GB SSD, Model M SSK (Dec. 1997), Dell P2416D, OpenBSD Current :.

Re: Open LunchBox Thinkpad Replacement
I think bunnie huang's open project has been shipping actual hardware, which is sort of a gorgeously chunky anti-portable:
https://www.crowdsupply.com/kosagi/novena-open-laptop
and someone from around these parts (RBS maybe?) had mentioned just the other day about this sweet-looking open ultraportable:
https://www.crowdsupply.com/purism/librem-laptop
(well actually they're only shipping a 15.6" right now, but saying they might do a 13" as well)
what I'd really love to see, though, is that bizarre X200-fake that was discussed on here a couple years ago:
http://www.thinkpads.com/forum/viewtopi ... 9&t=108078
(links/pics seem broken in that thread, one of the original 2011 articles is here, including pics - http://shanzhaiben.com/37/n-4837.html )
EDIT: apologies, didn't mean to imply there were photos of the machine's internals, just that I would love to see autopsy pics of it. /EDIT
not just to play with hands-on, but an autopsy of the insides as well.

Re: Open LunchBox Thinkpad Replacement
I was under the impression there's already been (granted very very few) armv8/aarch64 type devices around for a couple years now? consumers could buy iphone-5S in 2013, nexus 9 last year, and that huawei thing that seems hard to pin down. plus a whole bunch more coming soon (or already?) with those crazy-*** snapdragon chips that have 8 64-bit cores.
of course, none of those are running the most open/hackable OS (good lord, the handbasket trip down the road to android v5 seems to have mostly been "hey let's see how many hypervisors we can keep adding"
these days, things are going pretty weird and sideways...
- google releasing 64-bit android v5.x for ARM, x86 and MIPS.
- MS releasing free Windows 10 for the new armv7 RasPI 2. (which technically means it can probably be shoehorned on the BBB as well.)
- Intel releasing its own 64-bit android-ia v4.x for x86. (I've still been too scared to try, haha)
back OT:
anyways, it's great to see even 2 or 3 of these open/nearly-open laptop projects finally close to success and hopefully shipping some product soon!
