I always thought it was Helvetica Ultra Compressed (demo). Though harout says it is Haettenschweiler (demo), the letter 'k' is clearly wrong. Also, the stem of 't' is too thick in Haettenschweiler, but it is consistent with the 't'-top in Helvetica. Also, the dot of 'i' is a proper square (pre-Lenovo) in Helvetica, but too wide in Haettenschweiler.

For anyone out there interested in making wallpapers, adverts or anything, I've spend some time on photographing and digitally enhancing the fonts on classic thinkpads, and then use a font recognition SaaS on the web to quickly find out.
Now since I know that the original design of the ThinkPad has Millano Italian roots from Sapper I was not surprised to find that classic font of ThinkPad is.. Italian

The font is called 'Linotype Gianotten Light', here's in an example

He felt that previous Bodoni interpretations were not well suited for body texts, so he focused his study of Bodoni's "Manuale Typografico" on the types made specifically for text sizes. Consequently, his Bodoni has strong hairlines, rounded transitions and shorter, fluted serifs - elements that help to achieve readability by providing an overall tranquil effect.
This contemporary, highly readable family is an excellent choice for text settings in books, newspapers, and magazines. Incidentally, the name Gianotten has nothing to do with Bodoni, but was chosen by Pace and Linotype to honor Dutch typographer, Henk W. J. Gianotten."

Now for the blocky font featured on the 701, 700, etc is also from the Linotype GmbH company. I believed that IBM really favoured that company. This is also the same font used in the red-green-blue IBM ThinkPad logo.

This font is 'Linotype Helvetica ExtraCompressed'. I am uncertain whether it is the same as the Microsoft Helvetica. Example
