My 3 LCD monitors all have decent scalers in them and only one was a high end product. Two are XGA and do VGA and SVGA quite nicely. The best one is a Cornea 17" SXGA model is from around 2002 and can handle 15khz horizontal frequencies and goes down to 48hz vertical and can handle native Atari and Amiga display frequencies as well as 50hz PAL on the VGA input. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get an LCD monitor that scales nicely. Monitors with built in TV tuners and video inputs are the best bet since they have to deal with a wider range of signal frequencies. I need the HDMI scaler because the Cornea's DVI input doesn't support DHCP. My newer XGA TV/Monitor has component and HDMI input and can handle both NTSC and PAL video from both the video inputs and VGA port. It wasn't a particularly expensive monitor when it was new and is one of the few 4:3 LCD monitors I could find that had an HDMI input. My preference for 4:3 extends to external monitors as well.
Currently using: A W500, a W520, two X201Ts, an X220T, an X61T, a 14" T60P, a 15" UXGA T60P, and a W701.
Currently idle: A spare W500, a spare X61T, a 14" T61, a 15" SXGA+ T60, a 14" T60, and my first Thinkpad, a 770X.

What an excellent find! That monitor is pretty much the non widescreen version of mine. Will you purchase the DVI to BNC connectors for it?

Yeah I was very surprised to find one, they are pretty much unobtanium.

It's quite different from the FW900 though, it has much higher horizontal refresh rate (137kHz, 2048x1536@85Hz!) and finer dot pitch (0.22mm) witch is uniform across the entire screen (most Trinitron monitors have finer dot pitch at the center compared to the edges).
Not the largest, but the most high end monitor Sony ever made 30$

I have a VGA to BNC cable I used for my IBM POWERdisplay 20 (IBM branded mid 90's 20" Sony GDM model) so I'm all set.

Aahh - I was hoping you was going for the DVI as I wanted to know the results as my current (very old) graphics card doesn't have DVI.:D
Also - that monitor doesn't seem to overly heavy for it's specs:

unlike mine

Be sure to report back when you get it.

Ah so you can get DVI-I to BNC cables after all, I gotta' get one sometime, not that I have any use of it at this time.

It'll probably be a while before I get it, it's not located near by.

I had a 26" CRT HDTV until late last year. People would come over and be amazed by it. I only had my Wii hooked to it cause Mario was meant to be played on a tube TV. It had excellent PQ, but when I got the Wii U and wanted to use Netflix, things didn't come together well, so I gave it away to a friend for her kid's room and got a 32" LCD. The LCD has a nice picture and all, but it's not the same. Nothing lasts forever I guess.

The Sony Multiscan GDM-F520 has arrived, and it is a monster!

1600x1200@107Hz, I may be able to push a bit higher though, I just started testing it.
I'll use it for a few days, as I know from experience, that such an old monitor (2003) that haven't been used for a while, will improve quite a bit over time, if used often.
Then I'll recalibrate it using WinDAS, convergence needs some work, but the monitor is in good working condition.

Edit: 1920x1440@90Hz!
