Moving my DVD movies to my own cloud "Images"

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Tue Mar 24, 2015 1:16 am

So I want to move my entire DVD movies and shows to a digital format on a external HDD "My own cloud" what size would I need, More then 3TB? Don't mind the Blu-Rays as I don't plan to add them to the digital HDD as I already have them on DVD. I don't use netflix or any other online video service since I don't really have internet and plus I like my physical copies anyway "Ad Free". This is my Movie/show/game/Music-soundtrack cart. I only have a few games from the NES days to now and only kept with IPs that I wanted to stay with since I don't play games much anymore.

A full DVD is around 4.7GB, right? Multiply it by the number of discs you have in your collection and you'll get a ballpark figure of how much space you need. :D
Unless those are dual-layer DVDs, which are around 8.5GB.

I would point out Netflix is ad free. You can use software like HandBrake to crunch things down. A typical DVD movie will shrink down to 1-2GB depending on the particulars like quality, length, color, etc. With almost 5,000 movies even just ripping the all will take a considerable amount of time, most take between 10 and 30 minutes to rip depending on the disc. You can do batch processing in HandBrake, but 5,000 is still a lot. Hope you got a fast PC.
