Windows 10 is the LAST Windows release
From reading sites, I've read that Windows 10 maybe the last Windows OS and will just be updated overtime with version numbers such as google chrome OS and such. Windows also is talking about going service based and pay a fee to use Windows apps like maybe apps I guess would be Office, Windows Movie maker, Windows Media Player and so on just like how the XBOX works with memberships. So is this really going to be the last OS from Microsoft and will have to pay to use everything in it?

Re: Windows 10 is the LAST Windows release
I really, really like Windows 10 so I hope this SaaS isn't true.
Not that it matters to me. I am in the process of going completely linux on my personal computers with anything that absolutely positively requires Windows being in a VM. I get most of my software for free being an IT admin. But I refuse to pay for an OS anymore. I've bought 3.11, 95, 98, NT4, 2000 Pro, XP, Vista Ultimate, 7 Pro and Office 2007 and 2010. I refuse to give Microsoft anymore money. I know the few grand I've spent with them means diddly in their annual financials. However, if I don't need to pay for software now - I see no reason to start paying for it anyway.
I was willing to pay the $10 or w/e to upgrade from 7 Pro just to have a copy. But I will get it from work.
That all being said, I've spent the last 2 months moving everything I need to a shiny new Mint 17.1 install. Once I get the final details worked out, I am going to turn my current Windows 7 setup into a VM once I strip out the programs I don't need. After that, I document my current linux setup, wipe my SSD and go 90% linux. There's a few programs that won't run in Wine. The primary being one of our remote management programs. (Centrastage).
For me Linux has gotten to the point that outside of work and mostly inside of work it handles everything I need and more for a price I find very attractive.
Free.
I like that price.

Sounds like a marketing thing, they will still push updates that will break compatibility with older software and support new hardware.
Soon after their will be windows 10 v1 , windows 10 v2 ..

Re: Windows 10 is the LAST Windows release
I know. But still, SaaS really bothers me on some un-described level. I come from the days that when I bought software I could use it on any machine. I still have Windows 3.1 and Word Perfect 5 on floppy. I can still install and use them. I fear that with SaaS will come planned obsolescence. That I disagree with.pianowizard wrote:Windows 10 will also be a free upgrade for 7 and 8 users.Temetka wrote:Free.

I decide when something is of no use to me, not the other way around. Perhaps I am just becoming cantankerous in my old age (I'm 38 btw). I don't really know how to quantify it, but this coming technological revolution / paradigm shift really bothers me. Perhaps it's the lack of ownership and control by the user and the increase of ownership and control of the user.

Re: Windows 10 is the LAST Windows release
I also don't want to have to pay periodically to use certain software. Is Windows 10 going to eventually become SaaS? In that case, I would revert to Windows 8, even after Microsoft stops supporting it in Jan 2023. I feel that unlike XP (which was written without much concern for security), 8 should remain sufficiently secure even without further patches.Temetka wrote:I fear that with SaaS will come planned obsolescence. You can still do that with most programs. I am using Acrobat 8 Pro, Photoshop CS2, and Microsoft Office 2010, and have no desire to upgrade.Temetka wrote:I decide when something is of no use to me, not the other way around.

Re: Windows 10 is the LAST Windows release
I thought they said they were not going to do any editions. No Home or Pro or Ultimate, just plain Windows 10 for everything. I read there was just going to be Windows 10 for PC related stuff and Windows 10 Phone. I think one version of Windows is all you need, because then all the other versions are just locked applications if you got Home, witch is the cheapest version to buy. Microsoft just needs to release one version of Windows and everyone has the same version.
