Anything fun to do with a i7-3820QM CPU?

#1 Post by twistero » Sat May 23, 2015 6:21 pm

So I picked up an i7-3820QM laptop CPU at the dumpster*. Is there anything fun I can do with it?

So far I've considered building a desktop with this motherboard and a small mini-ITX case. Any other thoughts?

*Well, not a bare CPU sitting inside the dumpster, of course. Someone threw away a huge MSI gaming laptop, so I took it home and stripped it. The motherboard is completely charred around the power plug (wonder how much a scare the previous owner got  ), but I got 4 * 4GB DDR3 RAM, 2 * 64GB SanDisk mSATA SSD, 1 * 750GB Hitachi hard drive, 1 * 17 inch LCD panel, the aforementioned CPU, a bunch of screws and all kinds of interesting bits. Not a bad dumpster dive I would say.

Nice find!

As far as the parts go, that motherboard looks like an interesting project.

Did you manage to get any games off of the drive? Extra bonus

The CPU alone is very desirable to those wishing to upgrade from the 3rd-gen i5, so it'll fetch a good price on these forums or eBay, at least $100
