Anyone use a standing desk?

#1 Post by jedisurfer1 » Sat Sep 19, 2015 2:03 pm

I keep hearing that sitting for extended times is awful for every facet of your health. I'm sitting at a desk for 12+ hours some days. I do work remotely some days and have a comfy recliner with a swing table for my laptop. Not sure if it's worse or better than sitting but my back problems are 100x improved on the recliner. Wondering if anyone uses a standing desk and has seen any marked improvement in health or energy as there is room in the work budget to order one as long as it done before the end of the year.

If you have back problems, I would assume that using a standing desk for any significant length of time (i.e., hours straight) will still cause you discomfort. If done in moderation, say switching between standing and sitting every hour, that might help. At work in our new building everyone has been given convertible desks in our cubes. A built-in motor raises the desk surface so that you can stand and work. This would seem the best option as you would not be limited to standing only.

For back problems, a properly configured chair can work wonders. You may want to consult an ergonomic expert and find out what they suggest. As far as the overall health benefits that come with standing (as opposed to sitting all day), take frequent work breaks. Get up and walk around; it's what I do as my job involves programming in front of a computer.

Thanks I do like the idea of convertible elevating desks.

I think sitting all day is bad for your health. Several years ago I shifted from an active work outside job to tapping on a key board 10-12 hours a day. Gained 20 pounds and started having various maladies. I now have a stand up desk and an adjustable bar stool type chair. I find myself standing as much as sitting. Important just to be moving up and down.

Sitting all day definitely isn't good for your health, and neither is standing all day (too much static preassure around the knees). It is much better to sit for 20 - 30 minutes, and then stand for 20 - 30 minutes and repeat this cycle. I would recommend this approach for a standing desk. Also make sure your monitor and chair have adjustable heights, so you prevent unnatural seating or standing positions.

At work they were going to throw away this brand new retail cart that was never used. It is extremely heavy-duty. Shelves are moveable. I mounted the 24" Samsung to the top of the ad holder. That is a T-500 on the top and an Acer Core 2 Duo running XP Pro on the bottom.

I am eventually going to mount my two 22" monitors on the ad holder.

This isn't so much a workstation as it is an elevated computer/monitor stand so I can see music and lyrics while I'm standing and playing. It can be read from across the room so I don't have to stand right in front of it while playing.

I use the opposite much of the time, since I am a wheelchair user much of the time. Laptop mount when in working mode. I am a broadcast engineer and electronic serviceman, and ThinkPad fanatic. And can attest to their ruggedness.
