A friend is after a 14" replacement for a Sony Vaio, suggestions?

#1 Post by Recife » Wed Sep 30, 2015 6:02 pm

I'd be interested in some suggestions of your own and opinions of the following models.

Dell Lattitude 7000
Dell XPS 14
Asus Zenbook
X1 Carbon
T450s

Her only request was that it was on the lighter side but not necessarily one of the ultra thin models. Ultimately she would have probably bought another Vaio if Sony had continued in the laptop market, is she wise to avoid any future Vaio versions?

My favorite would be the T450s, but here in the US, the Latitude can often be had in the outlet dirt cheap, which makes it a better value if you can live with the inferior stick and keyboard.

Thanks for the tip about coil whine, suffered myself with this on my T510i to the extent I recently upgraded the CPU more in the hope it would solve the whine issue than for performance reasons, it didn't help.

I will NEVER buy another expensive laptop that could potentially suffer from such noise issues.

Has your friend considered a MacBook Pro? These days they can even boot Windows natively if you really need it.
