Not sure but I know 40GB ATA is the about the smallest you can go for with 7200, next up is 60GB SATA 7200. Sorry.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection, that what I knew with bunch of hard drives so far. :)

If you want it for speed, please know that a new 5400rpm with large size will outperform any old small sized 7200rpm.

platter density x rpm is what you need to look at as far as speed goes.

Smallest SATA I ever saw was 60GB...
Smallest SCSI - 37GB
Smallest PATA - 40MB :)
All of them 2.5 inches :)

Correction: 3 days ago I bought IBM Power PC 820 and I am sure it must have WAY smaller SCSI HDD, did not arrive yet though... :)

I have a PATA 2.5" Fujitsu MHM2060AT with only 6GB.

Ron, are you looking for 5, 7, 9 or 12.5mm thickness, or GB-size?
If the latter, 40GB/7200 is probably the lowest, but 60GB is more likely.
The lowest one I personally have is an IBM/Lenovo issued 60GB/7200 (Hitachi HTS721060G9SA00) from August 2006.

And I'm pretty sure I saw laptops with 20MB drives (286/386-era).

I have the impression that 60GB was by far the most common 7200rpm PATA 2.5" drive. Other sizes seem to be much harder to find.

Agreed - that's what came with my T20, way back when. I believe I still have that drive.

Since we're all comparing our smallest hard disks...

I have a 40 MB 2.5" ATA disk in a 386SX laptop from 1991 (which was a $299 add on option from the base 20 MB disk)... a 120 MB 2.5" ATA disk in a 486 from 1993, and the 2.5" ATA disk in my 755C is 340 MB... :)

Although they're all probably 5400 RPM or less. Not sure, to be honest. There's a 9xx MB hard disk in my 701c, then everything newer has at least a couple gigabytes.

OP is looking for 2.5" SATA, not 3.5" or 5.25" or even bigger.
AFAIK the smallest SIZE ever was 3.5MB (IBM 350)

I see references to 40GB Seagate ST94015AS (Momentus 7200.1). 40GB model doesn't actually show up in the datasheet for the line though so may have been OEM-only or something.

Smallest SATA
I have numerous Laptops in deep storage.
Wife is NOT amused, and frankly we have stopped killing laptops, so I thought I would assembly a and sell them. Dorronto picked up the first of many I have.

Uunderboi (son) has fallen in love with the T500 I built for him, and Other Half will not leave the Z61m.
I bought a T400 and hate it, so Im still on my long term runner the Z61t.
That leaves numerous T60, T61, Z60t, Z60m, Z61t and Z61m that could go together and make someone a nice daily driver.

Since these are all going to new homes:
Small SATA 2.5 inch

Honestly, you may as well pick a slightly larger 5400rpm drive since it will run and cost just about the same...

I think I got one as well, forget which laptop it came from.
I think it's a Fujitsu drive, I'll have to check.
