Question about routers...

No idea. Everything I know about CAT5 cabling is how to crimp on a new RJ45 connector, don't run it over 300 feet (well, okay, 100m if you want to get technical) and not to use it with GigE equipment. I suppose it shouldn't hurt as it's non-conductive and could prevent moisture from penetrating the connections. The downside to it is if/when you DO discover that something is wrong with the connection at the coupler, you might end up having to cut both RJ45 connectors off and crimp on new ones.

If you're running the LAN cable outside, either make a conduit for it or get a cable that's designed for outdoor use.

It's not going but maybe 30 to 40 feet.

When they built their office, they already have cable run from that outside area into the wall and inside where their computers are the cable leads to a ethernet wall outlet.

So, that cable cannot be changed.

I figured I'd just splice it for now to this cable that runs inside and if it becomes a problem later, I'll get a new cable and run it thru a hole in the wall to the inside area and tack it along the baseboard to their computer area.

He wants something quick, easy, and right now... so that's what I'll do for now and if it becomes a problem later I'll go with running a new cable and in that event I'll use one that is rated for outdoor use.

You probably have already installed a new router already, but i'm throwing in my 2 cents anyway for anyone else looking to do the same thing. In my office I have installed a couple of Ubiquiti UniFi access points. Depending on the configuration on the network, they may be a good solution. I have mine configured with two separate ssids linked to separate vlans. I like these in my office because they are pretty cheap for enterprise grade access points and they work very well.

Now if you are looking for router, I would go with the recommended Netgear AC router. Most of the high end routers are going to have guest modes. I had an older Netgear N router that had that. It worked okay, but nothing I have used has surpassed the reliability and performance of my trusty 10 year old Linksys WRT54g.
