Is there a "hacker" or "computer repair" group near me?
Is there a "hacker" or "computer repair" group near me?
I have an old Thinkpad that I want to fix, along with an old Apple Performa monitor. The latter sounds dangerous for me to fix alone, so I would need help. I'd like to learn how to fix things like this and would want someone to do it with. Is anyone a part of--or knows of--a group like this near (or preferably in) St. Petersburg, FL?

Re: Is there a "hacker" or "computer repair" group near me?
I'd wager posting on craigslist for old PC repair/guiding or checking one of the 2600 first friday meetings
I'd met maybe two or three customers who were into old computers, one man was an avid Apple collector.

Hey, thanks for the response! I was just thinking about this again. What's a 2600 first Friday meeting? Is that a Craigslist thing or an Atari fan group or what?

No.
If he's referring to 2600 the magazine (I love it), then this is probbaly a good starting point.

Craigslist is also a good choice. If you have TV repair place near you - perhaps they can take a look at the monitor you want repaired.

Yes the meetings from 2600 magazine/quarterly.
One of those random finds at Barnes and Noble that looked interesting from the other computer magazines.

Re: Is there a "hacker" or "computer repair" group near me?
So all Craigslist has is ads for places that do repair, and none of the 2600 meetings are near me (there are some a couple hours' drive from me, but they meet in public places like the food courts of malls anyway, and I have no idea how that would work). They both seemed like good ideas, but it looks like neither is going to work out. Any other ideas?
