Findings on two non-thinkpad computers.

#1 Post by thinkpadcollection » Tue Aug 23, 2016 12:20 pm

One is Toshiba satellite Pro S300L (PSSD1C-01W018). DDR2-800, 4500MHD chipset, datasheet for notebook does not say for 8GB but did work, and penryn 1066 fsb does work too. WIFI whitelist not present so choose any but strangely not intel cards. Cooling is no problem. The notebook is a brick and thick but strong, LCD hinges structure in base is metal. Keep track of screw lengths is easy, numbers is molded or stamped on anything in mm (example F10 is measured in mm). CPU swap is major work but not a issue.

Now, second computer is Sony VGN-SZ645, backlight is CCFL not LED but can convert to LED backlight by swapping video cable and LCD panel (still in research in which cable to get.) Notes: VGN-SZ680 is LED but exact same computer.
The chipset is GM965 means 8GB and you have to have XP 32bit, shared library installed first in order to flash bios if bios version is older and this is also to fix the incorrect report of memory size. Will take penryn 800 fsb no problem. Also WIFI whitelist is not present either. :) Only some linux disbributions have problems with CCFL backlight panel smearing while scrolling. Which panel is better for that? Base is metal sandwich for motherboard. Less than 4 lbs with 6 cell battery appox 4-5 hours if set up right. Works with windows 7 drivers too. Access to wifi card and hard drive is so easy, one screw and 2 clips for keyboard, six screws to get aluminum palmrest out. Both Memory and CPU access via bottom base's panels.

Only one big con is replacement of fan and real small Philips 00 or 000 needed to get tiny screws off for fan and major disassembly.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection
