Which drive to get after my Toshiba Hard Disks DISASTER?
In early June 2016 I replaced 2 hard disks in my desktop.
They were 3.5" Seagate Barracuda ST3320418AS 7200.12 drives, 320GB, SATA II 3.0GB/s, 16MB cache, 7200rpm.
The reason was their advancing age, not because they had any problem(s).
They'd been in my desktop since 2010 and had each over 30.000 Hours on them!
They were replaced with 2 new, larger drives.
Those were Toshiba E300 HDWA110XZSTA drives, 1TB, SATA III 6.0GB/s, 64MB cache, 5700rpm.
Supposedly: running cool (yes) and whisper quiet (yes).
Supposedly: more efficient power management extends the service life of the drive (no).
Supposedly: ideal for Reliability (no) and Extended Use (no).
Less than 4 months later, on 09/27/2016, both failed miserably on the same day!
At bootup, both announced: S.M.A.R.T Status BAD, Backup and Replace.
Then booting halted so I could read the message, and then press F1 to continue.
The desktop continued to boot, but I immediately ran CrystalDiskInfo, which for both drives gave this info:
S.M.A.R.T. Error 010: Spin Retry Count, Value 040/Worst 040/ Threshold 060.
The other drive had 020/020/060.
Both had only 1500 Hours on them!
What a load of CRAP!
I immediately made a full backup of each drive (together ca. 600GB) on my external backup HD.
Next I tested my Seasonic S12 600W power supply, which turned out to be perfect.
Bought them from Newegg for 2 x $50.99 = $101.98.
Contacted Toshiba for a warranty claim.
They could not replace the drives (I didn't want that anyway!) but the ba$tards only offered $86.68 refund on a Visa-card.
I got an RMA but I have to return the drives at my own expense and then wait 6-7 weeks for the refund!
Let me tell you that I'll never buy another Toshiba drive!
My desktop runs off a 256GB Crucial MX100 SSD, the other "old" drives were only used for storage.
As a replacement I want only ONE 2TB drive.
So far my choice would be: HGST/Hitachi Ultrastar HUA723020ALA641 2TB 64MB 7200RPM 3.5" (Enterprise class) SATA 6.0Gb/s
Big question: is that a good choice, or which drive would you recommend?

if you get 2 drives, try to get 2 different models, or from different sellers/different batch number, so that they are less likely to fail at the same time.

Re: Which drive to get after my Toshiba Hard Disks DISASTER?
My choice is hitachi and HGST. I have couple older than 8 years old running daily in my main PC, often 24 hours at times. Currently buying up 2.5" 500GB and 1TB HGST, few Hitachi, soon Samsusng PATA there and here drives for my herd of notebooks.
PS: HUA is a very loud if busy and rattles the computer otherwise cheap and great drives, yet not ideal for soft mounts otherwise if soft mount is very firm, no problem. I have 3 of HUA drives now, two 1TB in two "toy" computers and one 2TB for backed up data from couple aforementioned hitachis in main PC, sitting idle unplugged.
PSS: bug WD to not kill off HGST.
Cheers, thinkpadcollection.

What about a WD Red NAS drive, WD20EFRX 2TB 64MB 5400RPM 3.5" SATA 6.0Gb/s
My requirements are: quiet, long life, switched on/off every day (since electricity in our area is not reliable enough for 24/7).
The drive will get a lot more reads than writes, used only for storage.

Check amazon and newegg reviews, they are very useful.
