Looking to replace 5:4 monitor, but with what?
Currently I have a 5:4 19" HP LP1965 monitor with 1280x1024.
Viewing angles are 178/178, almost identical to IPS.
This is/was an excellent monitor, bought in March 2008, but it is slowly starting to show its age.
I do mostly Forum web-browsing and programming on it.
No gaming whatsoever, other than an occasional Mahjong.
No need for watching movies on it either, as I have a proper TV for that.
I also don't want built-in speakers, as I am still using last century's Henry Kloss Cambridge Soundworks, see viewtopic.php?p=759132#p759132
I'd like to get a similar good monitor, maybe a little larger but not much, guess my max. is 24".
I do NOT want 16:9 or the crazy 21:9.
I also do NOT want Retina, 3K or 4K, or whatever other high resolutions are floating about.
My selection will probably be limited to 16:10.
So far my first choice is a 16:10 24" Dell U2415 Ultrasharp monitor with 1920x1200.
Anybody have any experience with this model?
Any pros and/or cons?
Anything better?

Re: Looking to replace 5:4 monitor, but with what?
I have the u2415 ips one i think i got 2 refurb on dell outlet. I can tell you i absoultely LOVE those monitors. The colors are rich, the viewing angles put flexview to shame and there a bargain on rhe outlet. I got both of mine for about 360$ in total. The only con i can think of is that vga can be flaky as i got one with bad vga port and no hdmi can be a little bit troublesome when hooking up other items but an active hdmi to displayport by startech solves that.
These monitors close up feel like there 4:3. 1920x1200 may not seem like a big upgrade from 1080 but 180px makes a hige difference. I wonder if dell accidentaly swapped the medical monitors and mainstream in the pr department

Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

RBS might need to sell his car for those. You could get some 2560x2048 color medical monitors but you need to sell a mansion to afford thosePuppy wrote:Out of curiosity EIZO FlexScan EV2730QFX 26.5" Square IPS Monitor 1920x1920

Re: Looking to replace 5:4 monitor, but with what?
I had the U2415. Nice monitor, but I needed more screen real-estate.
I sold it and purchased dual Dell P1914S monitors. They are 19" 1280x1024. It has a thick screen bezel around it, but that actually matches all of the other Dell monitors I have sitting around.
The P1914S was about $80/each from Amazon. I use one monitor for browsing, the other with a fullscreen terminal session.
I don't know if it is technically IPS or not. But it has very wide viewing angles, close to 180 degrees, and way better quality than the supposed "IPS" screen in my two month old X250.
In either case, I've used six Dell monitors over the past two years, ranging from the P1914S up to the U3014, and they have all been great.

Re: Looking to replace 5:4 monitor, but with what?
My desktop has a DVI-D port, a VGA port and a HDMI port.
This monitor has a.o. HDMI (MHL) ports, do they take regular HDMI cables?
Will this HDMI cable work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/301972921836
In my CRT-days I had NEC and Eizo top of the line stuff, but that was last century.
That above Eizo is probably great, but not only way out of my budget, but also way too big!

MHL ports just mean that a small adapter can be used to stream HDMI over usb for phones. It work work normally with any HDMI cables. Just dont buy those HDMI cables that cost as much as the 27" eizo. Good luck finding a monitor. BTW a good alternative are the lenovo 24" ips wuxga panels. Used those but arent as good.

I game and look at screen daily my old early 7 years old LED SyncMaster PX2370 does the job and no sign of age still but how is Dell U2415 for fast paced game? Note that desk hutch space is limited that anything up to 24" can fit.
