Original IBM Keyboards

#1 Post by admsteiner » Tue Jun 22, 2004 1:36 am

Hi all,

I'm looking for IBM keyboards. I don't mean IBM branded keyboards, but rather the old fashioned ones that had the little bubble beneath the key for feedback. For a PC, not a laptop. The current branded ones don't have that feature.

Does anyone know the part number? or if IBM still makes them?

PS: I know this is OT in terms of thinkpads, but that's what OT means :)

You mean the big metal jobs with the "clicky" feel? I still have a few and use them daily. Do a Google search for something like "IBM clicky keyboard" and you'll find lots of them available.

I have one or two that were made for Dell and came with some Dell desktops we bought 10 or more years ago. I was pleasantly surprised to see that people are willing to pay extra for these, e.g. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... gory=33964 I really should clean out my basement. There's gold in them thar piles of "stuff." :)

(IBM actually used to make their own keyboards. Remember they made Selectric typewriters and 327x computer terminals for many years, not to mention the keyboards for their early PCs, until they sold their keyboard manufacturing facility to Lexmark. The newest "clicky" keyboard I have was made by IBM Mexico in 1993.)

That's exactly what I'm talking about. My dad wants me to get my hands on a bunch because he loves them. I used to have a good clicky (my brother uses it now) and my mom got upset because I kept on waking her up with my typing :-)

I'm going to check out ebay now. Let me know when you clean your basement ;)

Go to your nearest Salvation Army, Goodwill, St. VdP outlet or similar and look in their piles of donated computer equipment.

I see dozens of the IBM keyboards at these places all the time, usually for $.50 to $1!

Yeah, but how many come with spare key caps and a genuine IBM key cap puller? http://www3.sympatico.ca/hausman/IMG_0640.JPG :P
