Dell Dimension T-Series with a Pentium III, in 1999, I still remember the day my dad brought it home. I found it recently cleaning for a move, and it still worked! So I guess it has technically been in my possession for all that time, right? It had some pretty embarrassing stuff from when I was a kid, hah. It's got some rust on the I/O area though. I don't know where to begin with that.

As for laptop, probably a Dell Latitude D610 from 2004, I think. A laptop with a lot of problems, and became out of date pretty quickly, in my opinion. But I was still able to play Battlefield 2 and Team Fortress 2, albeit very horribly. I even brought it to college with me and used it for about a month when my SSD died on my main laptop. It served me well. Now it is just a big grey slab that sometimes gets in my way. I still love it though.

Mostly grew up on Dell because that's what my father's office used, besides the occasional Thinkpad.

"What computer have you had for the longest? When did you get it?"

Club American PC/XT Turbo, 640k RAM, 20 MB Seagate MFM drive, serial/parallel/game port card, and one of those fancy schmansy EGA monitors. Circa 1988 and a steal of a deal at only $2,200.00.

Best upgrade ever was dropping in an expanded memory card with 1 MB RAM. Running DRDOS 6 you could then load a lot of the DOS kernel, mouse driver etc. into back-filled high memory, add a disk cache, and task switch between applications. Even had a text copy/paste option between applications in the task switcher. You could have a half dozen applications open at the same time and switch between them in a couple of key strokes.

The $2,200.00 part? Probably the reason I still have it.

Sadly, I haven's saved any of my really old machines. I do have a Commodore 64 and a Amiga 500 and such, but not the original ones.

The machine in my collection, I have had for the longest has to be my Sun SparcStation 20. Found it on a flea market in the late 90's, and besides being a neat collectible, I actually used it with Solaris 8 for a long time, next to my PC. Also, it learned me what import duties are, and how hard they will charge a teenager, who is trying eBay out for the first time. A 32 mb memory upgrade turned out to cost a lot more than the machine itself.

My oldest computer would be the 6" analog computer that my mother gave me, made possibly around 1942.
Followed by my own Hemi log log duplex, 1969, which still gets used. So nice never to need batteries or backup power or have problems reading it in full sunlight.
And before you say "I meant DIGITAL computers!" I would mention that I traded in a 6" Sterling slide rule (analog computer) for a rebate on my Commodore64, and they took it without question. (They said "trade in your old computer", and I did.)

Now, digital computers? That would be my Palm Pilot. Still the most faithful digital servant I've ever had. It just WORKS. In fact I'm thinking of using it as a contact manager and dumping Gargoyle from my "smartphone".

Faithful old servants are always entitled to a warm place by the fireside. Wintel boxes? Can go sleep in the barn.

Do I get to one up you with my comptometer, from the 1920's? So old, auto correct doesn't even recognize it as a word :) .

One of these, just in better condition: Image

I'm not sure if comptometers (and I've used them) are ever considered "computers", any more than abacuses (abaci?) are. They are computing machines to be sure.

Classic Victor Comptometers.

Did you see "Hidden Figures" ? Good movie. Claims that "computers" were people, "computing machines" and such were what IRBM made.

I did watch hidden figures, though most of the time was spent half the time replacing the mobo on a W700 at the time.

Do agree, good movie.

If the Colossus and ENIAC were just giant missle guidance calculators, is the comptometer really that far off? What about the Apollo Guidance Computer. The astronauts on board said it was a calculator too. Its still a cool 'gadget' nonetheless.

Some undefined Packard Bell laptop (rebranded NEC Versa E400 according to the sticker).
My mom bought it used for me when I was 9 (2004) so I could leave my parents with a desktop PC that they could actually use (both as in free time, and in not having 20 random sharewares on autostart that changed weekly)!

French keyboard (I actually preferred unshifted symbols and shifted numbers), Fn key broken off with just the membrane dome left, Celeron, quarter-GB DDR1, Synaptics touchpad with mechanical d-pad for scrolling that never once had worked (just the regular edge gestures), 4:3 screen of course, battery that went from about 70 to 5 minutes in like a month... and FOUR usb ports, officially making it better than anything I've used since

Best software memories were Lunar Magic, WinHTTrack, and Openoffice 1.x Draw (for marble racetracks to build on the beach, what else?)

I remember it ran pretty well back them, however nowadays (= 4 years ago) XP felt too slow (my experience on a similiarly powerful Pentium 3 800MHz desktop, bought for 80 € in 2005 - and still my newest desktop -, is that SP2 and SP3 are very heavy compared to the previous versions) and I gave up on installing Ubuntu, over 1 hour for generating locales for some reason (it was going to be a spare computer for my father until he bought a Lenovo G50)

Packard Bell was re-branded everything.

There 286 machines and 486 machines were made by Zenith. The late 286 and 386 machines were made my Phillips/Magnavox. After that, my knowledge ends there but Packard Bell was really Re-branded bell.

Nonono.....I mean like the EXACT SAME MOLDS AND LOGIC BOARDS!! Literal sticker placements.

If I haven't made myself clear enough, lets see a picture of one to compare.

The first one is a Magnavox Metalis SX vs Packard Bell PB38620NB
The second one is Zenith Z-star vs a Packard Bell Statesman

PowerMac G4 Quicksilver 867Mhz. I worked on an engineers ranch for it in 2008. I didn't have a computer to call my own till that machine. It's what started all this computer geek stuff. I have advanced a lot in 9 years. I still have it and it's hooked up and ready to be used at my desk. It doesn't get booted much anymore though. My first Thinkpad was in 2010 because a local shop sold only Thinkpads.

Throughout my career I have stuck mostly with ThinkPad, that is after University I worked for MCI in 1997 and they gave us all ThinkPad 760XL's (although some lucky staff managed to get 760XD's, at introduction $5000+???), all the way up to now owning a T450.

Image

Above.. my old Latitude C810...

Although I have always owned a ThinkPad since 1998 in parallel I have had (for the longest stretch) both Dell C810 and then a D800, these were UXGA Workstation Class Latitudes and were arguably the most serious laptop machines available around 2002-2005'ish, don't think any IBM could compete then (certainly not on weight and size!).

They were built like tanks, literally, and obviously designed for abuse, extremely thick heavy plastics, weighing around 10lbs!! Ultra Sharp superb UXGA panels (as mentioned in a previous post on another thread, manufactured by IBM).

I am not sure how I managed to haul a 10lb machine around the world almost on a weekly basis (as a Global Consultant working on government projects)... I must have been stronger in my youth :)

Nowadays the T450 (at half the weight and size) feels a lot better.

I've had a Dell Inspiron 6400 since late 2006. Nowadays, the machine is still functional and used by a member of the family (not me though, but I'm its admin/caretaker). It's currently at it's second display, which is a nice, high-gamut 1680x1050 16:10 (though TN). Just last month I had to replace display hinges which finally gave up. Dell makes decent hinges, but there's only so much plastic they could've been attached to by copper wires after original hinge anchors chipped off with chassis parts [so, in 2017 I actually had to replace parts of body as well to reattach them]. This was all due to excessive vibrations - this machine saw a lot of travelling as I was commuting with it daily during my PhD studies (several hours a day). I also used up 4 batteries, the 5th now requires replacement again, as it won't hold charge even for 30 seconds of operation. So, gotta think about it. It's a Core Duo CPU at 1.6Ghz, so not that far from what's used today. Non portable (think battery) so high-wattage of the CPU is not an issue. AFAIK, my in-laws mostly use it for Youtube, but I bet it won't pull FHD:)
Funny part is this machine's been through much more than your everyday laptop. In 2009 my house burned - we lost one room completely. During the fire, the laptop was attached to an overhead projector, and itself stood on a wooden shelves that got half-consumed. I remember, funny, when I first ran into the room I just snatched the laptop, ripping out all the cords (poor vga port) and escaped the room (hey, still returned later and put the fire out with teamwork and about 40 buckets of water!). The palmrest was deformed from heat, all keys were burned to crisp. The LCD however worked still (broke some year later). Apart from that it was fully functional. I found out back then Dell used scissor switches which were full metal, so keycaps off and I started typing on bare metal switches. I touchtype, so not a big deal, only shift/spacebar/enter sucked as, well, no keycap no joy with spacebar:) [obviously ordered new keyboard later, but actually I think it was a cheapo noname duplicate - it had plastic switches and worse action. But at least, it had keycaps:)]
Eventually, I replaced also the palmrest in 2017. But like I said, this machine is still going strong, the users don't complain. I maxed it out, and put an SSD which made it semi-modern.

To summarize, it has 5th battery. It had already 3HDDs, now is at 4th. I broke the original dvd, now replaced with new in its bay. Has a 2nd screen, 3rd AC supply I think (these do break). If I remember, it has no HDD compartment cover, couldn't find one. I replaced the wifi, but new one (intel) turned out less Debian-friendly than BCM, so went back to BCM.

I still switched to Thinkpads (x220) in 2014, liking them more. But Inspiron is in full use, with such an impressive history :) One day I'll semi-burn my X220 as a means to compare with Dell:)

My parents bought me a computer to take to university, back in 1992. It's an unbranded mini tower, made by Danesoft (a small local company). It started out as a 386SX, probably with 250MB hard drive.

They later got me a maths co-processor (which seriously speeded up the CAD and maths software I was playing around with at the time) and a 5.25" floppy drive, to complement the existing 3.5" drive.

In the late 90s I had a spare AMD K6 II (233MHz) processor and motherboard hanging around, so replaced the 386 with that.

I find it quite amazing that I can still remember all these details, 20 years on!

I've long since got rid of all the PS/2 perhipherals that will work with it, but I installed OpenBSD on it a decade ago. If I needed to read a floppy for some reason, I could boot it up, ssh in, and I'd be away (that hasn't happened for years, though I do still have some old school work on 5.25" disks!).

If the fan didn't make such a racket I might actually use it as a router or for network storage, but a Raspberry Pi makes much more sense for that these days.

Bought ThinkPad E420 in 2012 and it is still in usage after inserting a new SSD. One minor issue with it is that I forgot the password after change. And it is kind of stupid to reinstall the os.

IBM PC 5150 in 1984. Bought from IBM directly via a sales person who came to my office when I called IBM Sales, guy in a blue suit, white shirt, I have the original sales receipt, it was a couple grand. Came with 8088 4.77mhz processor and 64K ram, I eventually upgraded to 640K ram. It came with one single sided 5 1/4" floppy, later upgraded to a double sided 5 1/4" and a 720K 3 1/2". Had a CGA (color graphics card). Eventually added a 10MEG hard drive on a card, then upgraded to a 20MEG drive. It came with PC DOS 1.1 and eventually I installed Windows 3.0 on it, barely ran it. My first Thinkpad was the Thinkpad 500, bought in about 1995 I think; wish I still had it but sold it when I upgraded to a TP600.

that i used for a long time but is now retired..? an X60p UXGA.. bought new in about 2004 more or less.. :)
I first thought Bill mistyped... and meant T60p.. but that doesn't explain the 2004 :)

An X60p would have been nice... but 12" UXGA? It's a tough one...
I thought so too but:

1: X and T are a substantial distance apart.
2: So it '4' and '6'.

I would take a X301 WUXGA over X60p. I dont like the littoe backspace key.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

I have every computer I've ever purchased, working and not, going back to my Commodore 64C (which does). I have a nice full-sized Gateway tower with a PIII 500MHz Katmai, 128MB RAM, GeForce2, 100MB Iomega Zip Drive, 1.44MB drive, DVD burner, 80GB HDD and one empty bay but it needs a power supply. I'd like to put Win98SE on to play games but don't play enough to warrant fixing it up. I still have about 30 Zip disks and a working USB external Iomega drive I can use on my current machines.

My oldest working is a 2007 Sony Vaio VGN-N320E with Intel Pentium Dual Core T2060 @ 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD and Intel i945GM running i386 FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE-p4. It's still more than adequate for general desktop activities like surfing the web, working with files, graphic manipulation, watching movies and listening to music. I have a screenshot of it on my site where I have a tutorial on how to set up a FreeBSD desktop to show how FreeBSD can breathe new life into old hardware. It has served me well over the years and is up and running file transfers as I type.
W520 running OpenBSD 6.2
T43 running OpenBSD 6.2
T61 running FreeBSD 11.1 x's 2
X61 running FreeBSD 11.1
T400 running Solaris 11.3
