PSU for a IBM NetVista S40

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Wed Oct 25, 2017 1:19 pm

I got a IBM NetVista S40 witch is not common to see these mini slim towers or at least for its time it was small. It is around the size of a first gen XBOX One.
https://my.ifdesign.de/upload/award_img ... on_092.jpg Only image I can find of it that's big enough to see on google images. You can see it even had a slim dock on the side for a ThinkPad CD Drive and floppy drive. Better picture of it: http://www.repubblica.it/gallerie/onlin ... er/3_g.jpg

The original specs was a Pentium III and I installed a Intel brand Micro board that has 1 PCI express slot for a graphics card. It just has a basic 3rd gen Intel Pentium Processor but can handle a i3,i5 or i7 later on. Currently has X2 4GB =8GB and claims to max at 16GB. Installed a 1TB WD Blue HDD, and has a CD/DVD/RW/BD-Ray drive.

The PSU is a slim design and only 75W and no processor 4pin for power but just the 12pin stand plug into the board. at the moment it is using (sticking out of case with long cable and too big and thick to fit inside case) 300W Lenovo PSU to run the machine. It is also using the onboard graphics since I don't have a GPU for it yet. The size of the 75W PSU is 8" Long 3-1/4 Tall and 1-3/4 wide. I can't find a style PSU like this other then DELL/HP servers PSU and they are probably very long. I want at least a 500W.

I've been looking online at newegg and found what looks to be DELL PSU replacements. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 8TC3PW4031 I guess I am looking at a 400W since it looks to be the biggest of slim I can find other then 420W. I went with my towers graphics card requirement of it's Nvidia GTX 960 4GB and it says needs a 400W PSU. Doesn't any other company make slim line PSU's? I have a 600W EVGA in my tower and I know a lot of custom PC builders are working on slim case builds as well. As for a graphics card for the case, I haven't a idea but probably will be recommended the GTX 750Ti.

I also have Netvista S40 case too. Problem with these chassis is PSU is so narrow, enough width for kettle socket and no else. Had to be less than 50mm wide.

Best suggestion is gut the original PSU and install typical PICO PSU DC TO DC converter and run PSU externally use original PSU fan to cool PICO PSU. This 12V only main output to many outputs via DC-DC converters topography is routinely done with high end ATX PSUs these days.

Typical PICO PSU are cool running and capable of more than 250W plus available for not too much price but this really adds up on price of parts to rebuild into better computer and there are better turnkey all ready to play with plus not to much on upgrade later on.

Yet, does not make sense with sending money after bad, just get a HP SFF Elite 8300 based on ivybridge or haswell based HP Elite 800 G1 SFF. They have PS/2 and serial ports, also low profile slots. Runs anywhere from 100 to 250 dollars just ready to go configurations. Shipping is included in this total price.

I though I was the only one that had one of these. I couldn't find anything on these machines and even checked Japan auction sites to see if this was a Asian only market system and no luck finding one.

I found out the dock for the S40 is called "Optional NetVista S Cradle" It has a Optional NetVista S Cradle - Bay for optional Portable Drive Bay 2000 for Ultrabay 2000 devices - Bay for optional CompactFlash USB Reader for IBM Microdrive or CompactFlash memory ® - Workpad cradle holder - Acts as a vertical stand - Part number 00N8062

I looked everywhere on ebay and just get IBM HDDs in the results. Be nice to complete the mini desktop even though I have a Intel ITX board for todays tasks in it. I jut got the case empty so there was no motherboard inside but the PSU. I even have my IBM WorkPad X20 with dock for this.
