Was given an HP 6303

#1 Post by MikalE » Sun Nov 05, 2017 10:08 am

My neighbor gave me an old HP 6303 Wally-World special yesterday. It looked like he just took it out of the box. Not a mark on it anywhere and clean as a whistle on the inside. Literally new looking.

It had Windows Vista and was password protected. After getting around the account password and wiped the drive after checking for the recovery partition. It re-loaded just fine, but I couldn't believe the amount of bloatware on the factory reload. Unbelievable.

Well, I found out Chrome isn't supported any longer, so I loaded up a copy of Windows 7 Home. It's running fine, but I don't know what I'm going to do with it.

It has a Pentium Dual Core 1.6 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM. It seems to work well with Windows 7. I have a similar machine that is also from 2007, it's an Acer with a Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. That used to be the main server computer for WideView and Flight Simulator when I had five computers networked together running the outside-the-cockpit view. That was also the last new computer I bought.

Now I have three desktops sitting on a shelf, all from around the same 2007 era and don't really have a use for them. I think I'm going to bring the Core 2 Duo machine into the den with a 20" monitor and use it to monitor WX radar and satellite photo animation.

Do any of you have older, nearly obsolete desktops sitting around doing nothing or have you found a use for these older, but functional machines?

I have 4 desktops, all home-built by me, 3 of them gathering dust, the other/newest one (from 2010!) is my "daily driver".

I need older PCs to interface with IDE drives and other old stuff I encounter from time to time.

That said, I discovered that two of my in storage PCs no longer boot (Socket 754 Sempron and Atom 330), had to scrap them. Managed to acquire a cheap ITX board with an AMD E350 Bobcat APU, but it doesn't have IDE ports.

Probably many folks here will be in similar situations.

But I have a Samsung RV 511 I3 2.5GHz Windows 7 64 bit which my neighbour was throwing away. I found it had only 2 GB of ram and had a severe memory leak with Windows 7 updates. Corrected the memory leak issue and now with 6 GB of ram it is handy as a 15.5 inch media laptop.

Also I have 3 desktops with dual cores gathering dust and one is a Lanparty NF590 which is still effective today even with the 2 x SCSI 75 GB 15k drives. I will probably just throw most of it away but it is a shame.

I have around maybe 12-15 desktops All IBM ranging from the oldest 1988 IBM Personal System up to my ThinkCentre M82 as my main.

Their is the Personal Computer 300GL, Aptiva, lots of NetVista plus 2 all in ones (1 PIII and 1 P4, P4 I think was the last IBM made of All In Ones) and the rest are ThinkCentres, All IBM and 2 Lenovo. Have 1 IBM X3200 server and that is built very well. I think all of IBM's desktops had a great design like the ThinkPads. They all had their own character looks to them. I just have a range from Micro to laydown desktops and large towers. And I do use them all but they get swap every so often throughout the year and put into a box when not using them. I just got my ThinkCentre A50p out 3 days ago and it booted up XP Pro just fine and play some games that were on it. It is a Pentium 4 an could be upgraded to 7 but they computer is fine the way it is. It even has its factory 40GB HDD in it still and a 2nd 1TB HDD when I installed it when ever that was. And to think my A50p was my main back in the day. Just a picture I found online of what my A50p would look like. http://www.pasocomclub.co.jp/img/1100000141914-1.jpg

And I almost forgot a have 2 Dell business class towers, 1 is a Pentium 4 and the other Core 2 Duo. Both a OptiPlex I think.

I have one of those business class Dell Optiplexes too. I forgot about that one. It's been pretty well stripped though with no memory, hard drive, fan, some cabling, etc. Mostly just a shell with the MB still installed.
