My Thoughts on the Nintendo Switch after a few weeks

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Mon Dec 25, 2017 4:29 pm

My Thoughts on the Nintendo Switch after owning it for few weeks. I was getting asked every other day at work if I got a switch yet or are you getting one and my response was I don't know maybe for the Mario world game. I had to take back a bad HDD to bestbuy and got a replacement and did a look around in the store since I never go to a bestbuy unless I wanted a HDD or RAM that same day. When looking around I seen that they had a lot of Nintendo Switches laying out on a self and not behind a glass case like you would find at any other store. This kind of reminded me back in 1996 when the Nintendo 64 came out and they had all the boxes stacked on a pallet, minus the spider security on the box that the todays $$ electronics have.

Well I looked at the box and just normal telling what's inside and such and figured I guess I can get one, so I debated on the color controller one or the all black controller. I got the blue/red controller Switch since I liked the Nintendo 64 with their different color controller scheme and then got Super Mario Odyssey and the Nintendo Pro Controller. Total came out to around $400+

I got home and didn't dig into the Switch yet as I like to work on my PCs, So I did that project first. later I then open the box to the switch and on top was the switch console. It is as big as a smartphone but somewhat bigger. Got the rest of the cables out and plugged everything in and have it sit on top of my desk hooked up to the Tv. Opening the Mario game and seeing the game cart (Size of a normal SD card) seen Nintendo has no manual in the case anymore, so no interesting stuff in the case. I put the game in and started playing Mario Odyssey.

Now if Super Mario Odyssey would of came out for the Nintendo Wii U I would of just spent $60+ that day, but I like the Mario world games so that is why I always picked up a Nintendo console since the NES days. Now that I pretty much beaten the game and almost 100% (main story beaten) I still kind of wish Nintendo made this game for the Wii U. For a few reasons is I would of spent just $60+ and also have a new game for my Wii U. The other is I don't travel so the entire tablet part is really a waste for me. If they made a switch as the non removable dock console only and no tablet and marked as $150 retail I would of got that. I kind of worry about the battery, Don't know how todays tech is but don't know if the dock will over charge the battery or not. So far it's been docked 99% of its time and only tried once in tablet mode.

Being that this maybe the only game I get for the Switch they do have Skyrim witch I already own it on the PS3,360,PC,PS4 SP,XboxOne SP and PC SP (Got free if had Legendary Edition) And don't really need another Skyrim, witch is $60 again and it has the Skyrim basic cover so don't know if that has Legendary Edition or not. Doom is another but again already have it. So in the end I like the Mario game but the switch is a alright console but really just got it for the game. I wish they would of made Mario Odyssey for the Wii U over Zelda witch came out on Wii U and Switch and plus I would of had another game for my Wii U and reason to play it again. I think I only have 4 games for it and its been sitting collecting dust since. If I remember Super Mario 3D world or Mario Maker was the last game I bought for it. I think if anything I just bought the Switch for the Mario Odyssey.

I pretty much pick up all the Nintendo consoles for a similar reason you do - but in my case it's not for Mario games it's for the collection of Zelda titles. It's a sickness not unlike collecting ThinkPads, I think...

I had a Switch since day 1 (as a bit of am impulse buy) but I haven't regretted it in any way. For me it's really convenient to be able to grab it and go with it. The trend seems to be at least one major release of a franchise for each console, and there's already a pair of Mario titles out which are exclusive to the Wii U. So it makes sense (to me) that they'd make Super Mario Odyssey a Switch exclusive title since they've already stopped producing the Wii U and are trying to keep "hot" titles coming for the Switch on a regular basis to encourage sales.

Either way you slice it up though, Nintendo really needed a boost since the Wii U was a commercial failure and the Switch seems to have hit the mark with both developers (notice how many more third party titles are out/in the works nine months after release compared to what we saw over the lifetime of the Wii U?) and buyers (sales of the Switch in its first year likely exceeding lifetime Wii U sales).

I was in Walmark in May and walked by the game case. After I got about 10 feet past, I whipped around cause it was the first time I had seen a Switch. I got the last red/blue one too. I should have bought them all and flipped them on eBay, but I didn't want to be greedy.

My thought was I'll try to sell my Wii U on eBay. If it sells at my price, I can keep the Switch, but if not, I can take it back unopened. It sold along with a few games I had, which was just enough to cover the Switch, Zelda and a Pro Controller. I surmised correctly that nothing good would come out for the Wii U again, so it wasn't worth keep.

Zelda and Mario have been awesome, but there's not much else there, which is always the rub with Nintendo. We'll see if they get any third part support. I looked through the upcoming titles, but didn't see anything exciting to me.

The bad thing about selling a last gen or older console is you lose the good games from that console, especially if they don't port it or have backward compatibly. That is why the PC is the best for all games from any era, but I like to keep my old PCs that were from those old games time, like a Pentium III. Command & Conquer plays perfect. If I would try to run that game on a 64bit Windows 7 or 10 machine the game may run to fast even if speed is set to the slowest. I had those problems with playing old games on new PCs. For console I like or liked my original PS3 (I still have it) It powers on but flashes a yellow light and turns off. So I bought the PS3 2nd gen. It is nice but only plays PSone and PS3 where the original PS3 played PSone,PS2 and PS3 game discs. I later got the PS4 witch was really just to get Resident Evil 7 and Fallout 4 on console since those titles never came out to PS3/360. I probably don't plan to get a PS4 Pro as its just about I think 4k support and bigger HDD. Now if the PS4 Pro as I think should of been came out with full backward support to play PSone/PS2/PS3 and PS4 game discs that would be great and could just have one console out for my entire PlayStation library. Can have accessories like memory card support adapter for PSone/PS2 (I have this adapter for my PS3 and can do backups to PS3 or PC) Dualshock1 and 2 plug adapter if want it. Linkage with Dualshock 3 could be optional as well. I just think that's what the PS4 Pro should of been. Microsoft is slowly doing this with the XBOX One and I think they are going all the way back to the original XBOX with disc support, so you could play the last 2 gens on the XBOX One. but I'm not sure

Just board and looking through post. Probably since the last time I posted on here, I haven't touched the switch in around a month or more. I picked it up on the top shelf on my desk and it is somewhat covered in dust and went to power it on and the dead battery icon showed and turned off. If Nintendo would only release some of there games on PC starting with old ones not making profit anymore they could make some on other systems like the PC. They could be bringing Wii U games to it since they claim that system is unsupported to them now. I would be waiting for Mario Odyssey to come since it is a current gen game but can wait.

I've been thinking of selling the Switch since I beaten the Mario game and it maybe the only game I get for this system, all other games that are for it are also on the other 2 main consoles. The Nintendo DS Lite I bought way back (still like brand new with box) I only got it for Super Mario 64 DS and that was the only game it has. My Wii U probably never even seen 20 hours its life powered on. Only have 3-4 games for it. And if can play those game discs on PC I would sell the Wii U.

I am going through old/new electronics I don't use or ever will to try to make some room. I did last year sold off some of my rare ThinkPads. It was sad to sell them off but know it is probably going to another collector so they will be safe.

I actually saw a Switch in the Walmart game case just a few days ago... strange that I saw this just a couple days later. (I saw the TV commercials but since I'm not big into video games, I never looked at one.)

Interesting that they're playing with the hybrid setup. That is actually really neat since you can have one system for portable use and home use.

I was never that into video games. Despite being 18 years old (I'm one of the young ones here), my family had only a Super Nintendo (SNES) all the way up until I was 9 years old, then we got a Wii. Then something happened and I haven't had a game console since.

About the closest I come is Minecraft. I always enjoyed building/making things, and I used to play around in SketchUp just building random things. Now I play many hours of Minecraft on my T420. I've been working on the same world for over two months now, where I've built at least six villages from scratch - and multiple skyscrapers to boot. 8)
