Dells position in the PC market isn't very good. They are far away from Lenovo & HP in terms of worldwide sales. Being a distant third in a shrinking market can be a problem.

amazing

over here at least Dell still has a good grip on laptops and servers and they're still big with corporates and their next business day onsite service

I would also think that in the US both Dell and HP still do well due to the US govt. kicking out Lenovo on tenders due to that whole owned by China govt. thing.

Current Dell Latitudes and (some) Inspirons still impress.

Dell laptops are an obvious no go for me due to their chiclet keyboards and lack of good trackpoint, but I appreciate what they've been doing in the display department - dem thin bezels are actually useful to maximise the screen real estate.

Got myself an U2417H monitor lately, good bang for the buck. Those who can tolerate chicklets could look into the XPS 13 whose display's thin bezels are even more useful. Too bad this series has been plagued with coil whine.

Dunno what Dell's plans are, but I hope they'll at least keep the monitor-making activity. It's their forte. They could become another Eizo.
In fact, Dell owns 80% of VMWare already. Dell is trying to become a publicly traded company without going the IPO route.
Phew.

I'd say the E7440. Its what the T440 SHOULD have been.
Probably should be Thinkpad16by10.

Looking For: 386 laptop, IBM or not.

My dislike of the E7440 is that it runs hot under load and a small battery.

I slowly became a fan of the E6430, though it is very ugly & thick, they seem more durable than a competing T430, but this is by observation by parting them out. Though I've gotten many ugly and bashed E6430/20 from my old job from previous businesses, not many seemed to have damaged mobo frames, maybe lid damage.
Anyways, I've yet to get an E6440, the last of the 6xxx sereis before they 'upgraded' to the thinner 7xxx series and 'modernized' the 5xxx series. Really is a shame because the E6440 had a 1080p IPS option and finally brought mSATA support, something that Dell & HP had been lacking when the T420 had it.
