How many people on this forum own a Galaxy S9/S9+?

#1 Post by kfzhu1229 » Mon Mar 26, 2018 9:11 pm

I know this is an odd place to ask this, but I am just curious who else on this forum owns or will own a Galaxy S9 or S9+.
If so, what variant as well as how is your experience with it so far?

No Google vulnerable crap in my home. All Android devices have terrible security update policy, updates are delayed by weeks or months (Samsung included) unlike Windows 10 Mobile or iOS that are delivered immediately on all devices.

I have an S9, AT&T version. Once I was able to install some of my Blackberry software on it (Hub and Calendar), I am quite happy with it, fast, great screen, HD voice and wifi calling. Ignore most of the Samsung apps, disable Bixby.
Current: 2 x W520 ET, 3 x X220 i7, X220 i5, T420, X230 i5, T420s, MacbookPro, Dell Venue 11 Pro

Is the battery life good on the Snapdragon side? Some things I am afraid of on the Snapdragon variants are generally overheating (thus desoldering over time) as well as battery life.

I don't think heat has been an issue with chips since 2008 and the T61p. I have a Galaxy A3 and a few hours of some emulation will cook that thing. Had it for a year and the battery is holding just fine with the same performance from when it was new.
Probably should be Thinkpad16by10.

Looking For: 386 laptop, IBM or not.

My experience for Snapdragon devices is just not the same.
My friend had two Sony Xperia Aqua M4 (one for him and one for his brother), both broke down and toast themselves into bootloop after 1-2 years of regular use, thanks to Snapdragon 615.
I've had 2 Galaxy Mega 6.3, both motherboards gave up after a year of use or two of regular use and turned into bootloop and a hand warmer with that.
Also, if you search for second hand LG (or Nexus) phones, many of them suffer from the same bootloop issue due to that Snapdragon chip, while I have three Galaxy S II (two Exynos, one Broadcom) and Galaxy Note N7000 Exynos and all of them still functions just fine as a MP4/YouTube player at least.
Moreover, there are many reports of Galaxy S8/S8+ and Note 8 getting bricked after their battery drained to 0%.
So I got scared of Snapdragon devices, and spent some extra bucks, do myself a favour and got myself an underclocked Exynos variant of S9+, which should run a lot cooler than SD845 and cause less problems long-term wise.

There is your problem right there. Anyway, I really just avoid Snapdragon at this point. They make crappy chips that perform poorly. The last good chip was the 801, but that was a really nice performer. If they made a chip on the 800 or 801 architecture, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I go with MediaTek(something with more than 2 cores and 300Mhz) or really Ecnoyx or whatever Samsung uses. Those are good.

You get a point there. Sony midrange phones are a lot cheaper than Samsung's, but they don't last even 1/3 of the lifespan of a midrange Samsung phone, as well as using a lot inferior build quality both outside and inside.
As for Snapdragon, they are just playing catch-up to the A11 Bionic and can't quite outperform 835 with 845 in terms of raw benchmark scores, while Exynos 9810 doubles the single core score of Snapdragon 835 and is 1.5 times the score of 845.
That said, since Samsung released Exynos variant a lot sooner than the Snapdragon variant, they do not have as much time to do optimisation and stuff, so they are pretty evened out at this moment.

My Z3C(Flagship)'s battery was only 1/3 over about 8 months. My A3 battery is at 90% after one year. Sony doesnt make very good phones but I do like their feel and the fact they are the only manufacturer of ood small phones. I guess I have no choice. XZ1 Compact it is.Or a Blackberry Priv if I jump ship into big phone waters.

I am always the one with a big phone ever since I get serious about smartphones. Back in the iPhone 5S days, I had a Galaxy S II Sprint (Epic 4G Touch), Lumia 925 and 1020. All of them have 4.5" display which was considered huge back then (All of which had 15:9 aspect ratio).
Then I had Galaxy Mega 6.3 (two, and all of them had mobo failure) which was some of the best biggest phones there existed.
After that I have Galaxy A8, Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note N7000, all of them have decently big screens.
Now I have Galaxy S9+ with that 6.2" 18.5:9 display which is still huge, again.

I had those. They were beautiful phones, they were fast, and the cameras were to die for. 4.5" No problem, small bezels 5" no problem but the moment I cant hit the other edge of the screen with my thumb I have a problem. I have slightly smaller than normal hands though.

I much dislike the recent migration to 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The Galaxy S9+'s 6.2" screen is only 6.89 cm wide, while the Galaxy Mega's 6.3" 16:9 screen is 7.85 cm wide. Within Samsung's Galaxy Note series, screen width has been decreasing, which is why the only Note I've ever owned was the very first Note introduced in 2011:

Note (5.3" 800x1280): 7.13 cm
Note 5 (5.7" 1440x2560): 7.10 cm
Note 8 (6.3" 1440x2960): 7.00 cm

At present my primary phone is the international version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (model T715) which is a tablet with phone functionality. Its 8.0" 1536x2048 screen is 12.19 cm wide! I also have two secondary phones, which get free service through FreedomPop. The larger of these is the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro with 6.4" 1440x2560 (7.97 cm wide), while the smaller one is the Mega 6.3 with 6.3" 720x1280 (again, 7.85 cm wide).

Is the Mega 6.3 the biggest phone you've ever had? How come you haven't tried larger ones? Nowadays the Mega 6.3 is the smallest phone that I am willing to use.

I am well aware that there are larger phones by companies like Sony, Samsung and Huawei.
I have seen things like Galaxy W at 7". But Galaxy Mega 6.3 on itself is already a watered down version of Galaxy Note 3 in terms of specs other than the screen size and battery size.
Galaxy W is a watered down version of Galaxy Mega 6.3. I feel like phones bigger than that are like more of dumb big to have less density therefore less cost, not like Galaxy Note big where manufacturers pack everything they can in such a package.
That said, the smallest phones out of my current daily drivers is the original Galaxy Note with its iconic S-pen. My other daily driver include the Galaxy S9+ with 6.2" display, and I sold my 5.8" S8 to a friend and broke my 5.7" Galaxy A8 2015.

I agree with you regarding the Mega 6.3 and the Galaxy W, which I had hoped to buy until I saw its lousy specs. BLU also had several 7" phablets that were severely underpowered, especially the 1st-gen Studio 7.0 with a 7" 600x1024 TN screen! I had that 7-incher for a couple months and hated it. But there have been a few phablets larger than the phones you mentioned that have respectable components and are quite powerful compared to their contemporaries, for instance:

Lenovo Phab 2 Pro released in Nov 2016, https://www.phonearena.com/phones/Lenov ... ro_id10108 (I have this)

Honor Note 8 released in Aug 2016, https://www.phonearena.com/phones/Honor-Note-8_id10196

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 released in Sep 2015, https://www.phonearena.com/phones/Samsu ... nch_id9384 (I have this)

Huawei MediaPad X2 released in May 2015, https://www.phonearena.com/phones/Huawe ... -X2_id9277 (I had this)

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 released in Jun 2014, https://www.phonearena.com/phones/Samsu ... 8.4_id8663 (I had this)

Sony Xperia Z Ultra released in Jun 2013, https://www.phonearena.com/phones/Sony- ... tra_id7883

After owning any of the above giants, it's really hard to stand something as tiny as the Galaxy S9+! Most pants' pockets are too small for the 8.4" Tab S or the 8.0" Tab S2, but a few are large enough.

Do you actually use any of them for things like phone calls, text messages, and the phone oriented stuff, or you have them accompanied by another phone sized device? I for one skips all the tablets and have a phablet, laptop and a desktop and therefore is quite anti-Apple.

I find a phablet a poor compromise of size of function. A phone with a 5" screen should be used for texts, phone calls, and on the go internet usage.

If I need to type something or need more screen space, I probably need more power too and Ill grab an X220 to go. I don't see the point in a 7" screen that can't fit in my pockets but doesnt have the power to get something done. Tablets just amplify this size-power ratio(or lack there of) problem.

Just my 0.02$.

Just curious for you Thinkpadders with huge phones, what applications do you guys use to justify the large screen?

I don't have anything that is in-between my phablets (from 5.3" to 6.2") and my 15" laptops (I have 14.1" T23 and T43, as well as 13.3" 600, but I am not carrying those around with me anytime soon)
If I just wanna stream YouTube and stuff like that, I use my phablets.
If I just wanna go over some course material on pdf between my lectures on the quick, I use my phablets.
If I wanna play YouTube video and do something else at the same time (usually in the bathroom), I take advantage of the big screen and do split-screen multitasking.
If I have some not very important notes to take down that I know is gonna get clunky to manage if I use paper, I do it on my phablet with a s-pen.
If I need bigger screen than 6", I take out my 15.6" T530 or 15" T43p.
Being a person who carries at least 2 phones in my pocket and a thick T530 laptop in my bag all the time, I do not need another tablet to carry around with.

Yes of course. What's wrong with doing these on a supersized (though still pocketable) phablet as big as an iPad Mini?

I don't care for tablets either, but as I said earlier, I also can't stand the small size of the phones that you call "phablets".

1) I read a lot of PDF files on the go, specifically, sheet music and scientific journal articles, which are painful to view even on the 6.4" phones I listed above.
2) Typing is much easier on a huge giant touchscreen than on a tiny touchscreen.
3) All web sites and videos look much nicer on an 8" phablet than on tiny phones.

The 8.4" Samsung Tab S and 8.0" Samsung Tab S2 are almost 3-in-1 devices, combining phone, tablet and laptop into one. While traveling, I often just bring my largest phablet, which is currently the Tab S2. Even at home, I turn on my computers only about twice a week, because the Tab S2 suffices for most purposes. I don't much enjoy the 6.3" Samsung Mega and the 6.4" Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, but I have them simply because I get some free data from FreedomPop (1GB/month for the Mega and 200MB/month for the Lenovo).

My pockets arent that small, my fingers are. I cant reach the other end of a 5.8" display in one hand. I might consider a blackberry priv and jump ship because I can use the keyboard as a touchpad. The physical keyboard beats a touch keyboard anyway.
Probably should be Thinkpad16by10.

Looking For: 386 laptop, IBM or not.
