Sydney - buying HP laserjet?
Sydney - buying HP laserjet?
I'm moving to Sydney soon and will need a HP Laserjet.
I have one now -- used ones are cheap in Hong Kong. It would be expensive to ship and probably a good chance it being trashed on the way.
Specifically I have a HPLJ 2420 and need something similar-- 600/1200 dpi, Postscript, ethernet.
Cheap toner refills available.
I guess places that sell used corporate Thinkpads might also have these, so asking here.

Buy a Brother laser printer instead, such as this HL-L5100DN.
I have its same-sized predecessor Brother HL-5240, that I bought new in 2007, still going as good as on day one!
Or if size is important, check the smaller HL-L2370DW.
Brother printers are way better and refills (even non-Brother) are a lot cheaper as well (7000 pages refill for $19.99)
Make sure you get the right voltage for Australia (230V).

Still asking WHERE to buy, not WHAT.
Ordering from USA to Australia is a non-starter, shipping is more than the cost of the printer.

Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

I'm guessing if you trust big-box stores more than the Internet (which at times, I do) then one of these stores would be your best bet.
Seems JB Hi-Fi and Strathfield have stores standing in different parts of Sydney -- probably among other locations in the region as well (assuming you train ride / drive to the nearest suburbs).
Ofc, the closest to Australia I've ever been is New Zealand so I can't help much further -- but good luck on your search.

Re: Sydney - buying HP laserjet?
Sydney is a city with 5 mil. people. You can just about get everything here.
What is hard to find is 10yr old Laser printers, new or in good working condition.
Here's an example:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-LASERJET ... ctupt=true
WHo would pay $300 for this?
OP fails to understand that HP, like many consumer companies have rapid model turnaround.
Just buy any modern printer or all in one laser BUT first check out toner prices.
Eg. I have a Fuji Xerox all in one.
It takes generic toner carts of 3,000 pg at around $25 aud. That's as good as it gets.
Avoid anything that takes 1,000 pg carts, its just not worth your time.
If you want, cruise around for a big enterprise printer that takes 10,000pg carts at around $100 generic, but few people have the room.
I have a lot of sources for Thinkpads but its not usualy something people advertise, gumtree is pretty worthless due to the proliferation of mums of dads who want to sell $500 T400s etc.

Re: Sydney - buying HP laserjet?
Yeah, I'm an idiot who has been using laser printers for 25 years, and know nothing about them.
The "rapid turnaround" of models with useless new features means that they are not designed for durability or compatibility, and likely there are no compatible toner cartridges, only expensive ones from the original manufacturer, since toner/ink is the major profit centre for these.
I need
1) min 600 dpi b/w
2) reliable paper handling -- not fun printing 200 pages if it jams after every 10.
3) cheap toner refills
4) Postscript compatible, not a "Winprinter" with a weird proprietary printer driver to make up for a dumbed down printer.
5) networkable
And the short way to say all that is "Used HP business printer", as HP laserjets had all those features 15 years ago,and not much if any improvement since.
I used a bunch of those when I was working in a small company and now self employed for 17 years have continued to do so, but pennypinching as it's my personal money.
I'm currently using HP LJ2420 made about 2006, cost about US$50, toner cost US30 for 12000 page cart.
I asked here because I thought that Thinkpads were a similar product: designed for business, solid and reliable and sold off while still in good condition when they upgrade, with a good parts and repair infrastructure.
I know where to find this stuff in Hong Kong, e.g. here, but they cost too much to ship overseas and who knows if they would arrive in one piece.
Anyway, seems I was wrong to ask here, all I get is patronising lectures and/or irrelevant responses.

Re: Sydney - buying HP laserjet?
My oldie Brother HL-5240 from 2007 is plugged in via USB into my router, and hence networked.
No need for a wifi-enabled printer.
It's available to all computers who have access to my home network, whether wired or wireless (after installing the Brother driver).

Re: Sydney - buying HP laserjet?
There's an old maxim that's relevant here more than any other place.
If you're an expert then why do you need to ask?
There's a link right there. Pay your $300 and move on.
In almost every sector there's rapid model cycling. THis should be plainly obvious to anyone. If you have a laundry list of specific requirements then no one is better server to meet them than yourself.
Thing is many of us have been in the IT industry for years and we dont need to brag about it. If you are then you really dont need anyones advice so why ask for it.

I didn't say "wifI". I said "ethernet".RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 5:34 amMy oldie Brother HL-5240 from 2007 is plugged in via USB into my router, and hence networked.

I can plug that into my router, no proprietary drivers, then my PC, laptop, Linux, Android, iPad, can all access it by IP and a standard driver.
I know there are ways to use USB in some routers, but ethernet works with any router and almost anything that needs a printer.
If I got a free USB printer I'd make it work, but that's not likely.

Re: Sydney - buying HP laserjet?
I don't see your problem.
Your HPLJ 2420 has a USB connector.
Any decent router also has one or more USB-ports, so hook up your printer there.
The printer-driver needs to be installed in each computer that wants to use the printer.
An ethernet-wired computer needs different printer-driver settings from a wifi computer, that's all.

Re: Sydney - buying HP laserjet?
I asked about the things I don't know.
You insist on lecturing me on things I didn't ask.
I can find a lousy deal all by myself, but thanks anyway.
I only gave the "laundry list" because you assumed I didn't understand what printers are or how the market works.
And when I explain exactly why I asked for what I did, I'm "bragging"...
It's exactly because of the "rapid model cycling" that I prefer a line that is a bit more staid and has long-term support in terms of consumables, parts and compatibility.
Again, same philosophy as Thinkpads, not cutting edge, but you don't need to throw them away in a couple of years for lack of a driver, parts, etc.
I'm sure you disagree with some or all the above. We can take that as read and you don't have to waste your time on me any more. Please.

It's not a big deal, but I just prefer to use ethernet rather than buy a new router and try to bodge it with USB.

I wish you good hunting in your quest for 10yr old printers in a foreign land.
Sounds like a normal thing for most immigrants to Sydney.

Re: Sydney - buying HP laserjet?
To be fair, this isn't really the best place to ask "where to buy a used HP Laserjet in Sydney".
This forum's members are spread far and wide, but there's not much of us active, and there's little guarantee that there's one who lives/lived in Sydney and purchased a used laser printer.
Perhaps an online community with a greater number of users will be of greater help to you. Reddit, perhaps?
