[Edit: Amended Thread Title to clearly show that Intel does not support this PCIe 4.0 spec]
PCIe 4.0 is coming (for AMD only; will not work on Intel). No public PCIe 4.0 plans for Intel yet.
www.pcworld.com/article/3400176/pcie-40 ... ility.html
1. The PCIe 4.0 SSD runs so hot (faster chipsets) that a heatsink case is mandatory.
2. The PCIe 4.0 chipset runs so hot that a dedicated fan for this may be necessary, to be implemented by the motherboard manufacturuer.
[rant_mode_on]
3. PCIe 4.0 SSD runs on yet new interface, and is not backward compatible.
ie: You cannot put your existing NVMe SSD into this PCIe 4.0
ie: Your existing ThinkPad cannot accept a PCIe 4.0 SSD apparently.
Why change the SSD interface just when the M.2 PCIe NVMe market had finally hit its stride in the past few years??
Gone are the days when you can just buy an aftermarket 2.5" HDD or SSD, and you can literally share it with any and all of your ThinkPads.
Now we have to juggle M.2 PCIe NVMe 2280 SSD vs 2.5" SSD (and legacy 2.5" HDD for some), which obviously are not cross compatible with all your ThinkPads.
In the not-too-distant future, we might get yet another newer and incompatible PCIe 4.0 SSD standard, with SSD incompatible with all of your previous ThinkPads??

OK, here's one of the first PCIe 4.0 "2280" products for AMD only (ie: this SSD is not supported by Intel),
showing you the heat shield on this SSD (because the SSD chipset runs quite hot).

Re: PCIe 4.0 is coming (for AMD only; will not work on Intel)
Take a look at this: Samsung announced a concept PCIe 4.0 SSD, again only for AMD chipset motherboards (no Intel):
www.pcworld.com/article/3439821/samsung ... r-die.html
The PCIe 4.0 SSD had a cooling case complete with grills; this SSD runs very hot!
If this continues on like this, the PCIe 4.0 SSD (for AMD) may require cooling fans, just like GPU's.
I do not like where this is all going; notebook computers with THREE (3) major heat giving sources may well throttle CPU/GPU/SSD all at once...

I'm beginning to see why Intel did not announce their version of PCIe 4.0 yet; it is not yet mature, got technical issues like excessive heat given off...

It wouldn't be an AMD product if it didn't run unnecessarily hot!
Seems like a cash-grab for enthusiasts who want the latest and greatest to me.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.
