Toshiba Satellite 2410-304

#1 Post by Droider » Tue Oct 22, 2019 6:08 pm

Hi everyone,

If it is in good shape and costs cheap, i buy laptops of known brands eventhough i prefer to buy thinkpads first, it is not easy to find them in good shape here, at the least in Turkey. Bought something new today without a clue if it worked, flea market style negociation, dirt cheap in the end. it is a Toshiba Satellite 2410-304 laptop in great shape. No broken parts or visible flaws etc. Brought home,plugged in and boots right into XP without any issue. Original config ;

pentium 4-m 1.9ghz
256mb ddr ram
15" xga panel
32mb geforce 420 go
30gb 4200gb hdd with full of viruses :)
Dvd rom,
Internal floppy drive !
2 big speakers with subwoofer
No wifi card but built in antennas.

The laptop missed a few keys but i had exact same keyboard ready in my bin, added in intel 2200bg, replaced 30gb 4200rpm with a 60gb hitachi 5400rpm hdd, ram upgraded to 1gb single stick. Battery still holds charge for 40 minutes which suprised me nicely. It has YAMAHA S-YXG50 sound card which is amazing for MIDI or general playback. Comes with front multimedia keys, lpt port, vga out, tv-out through rca jack, 3 usb ports, infrared, sdcard slot, 2 cardbus slot type ii & iii, fireware port, display is bright and good contrast, refresh rate easily overclocked to 100hz through nvidia settings. Formatted and setup XP from scratch, applied all drivers and updates, utilies, the thing works like day1. If you come across a toshiba laptop like this, don't turn your back on it just because it isn't a thinkpad, lol. I think it is a nice retro machine for gaming or multimedia.

It isn't all pink, i have an issue. I can't manage to install more than 1gb of ram in it. Bios recognizes 1.5gb but gives bluescreen as soon as winXP starts loading. Tested with 4 different tested good rams, no avail. Just stuck on 1gb. Thinkpads with the same chipset are known to take 2gb ram without issue. Searched the web, no info from real users.

Wow, that white trip is reminiscent of the old Dell laptops.

As for the ram, what kind does it take? PC2?

It has 2 RAM slots, try a (1GB) PC2100 module in slot 1 and keep slot 2 free, does that work?
Now do the reverse, still work OK?
Now try both, crash?
Maybe you need a new(er) BIOS, or the max is indeed 2x512MB=1GB.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Tried all options before opening the thread, slot 1 or 2 and the newest bios. Didn't help. It just crashes with more than 1gb of ram. Guess it is what it is. :)

It's hard to believe any P-IV system wouldn't accept 2GB of ram.

Hmm, according to the published specs, 1GB is the maximum.

I guess unlike Lenovo and the T520, Toshiba really means it.

Lenovo stated that the max for the T520 was 8GB but it will use up to 16GB.

Toshibas of this era has very primitive bios, this machine doesn't even boot from USB. P4M and 845 chipset. I am not surprised it didn't accept more than 1gb of ram.
