I work for a major PA health network, I heard from my boss the brass are "talking about" opening back up. CA Gov Newsom announced plans last night to develop a "framework" to re-open and our fearless Gov Wolf was said to be in talks with other east coast gov's to do the same. If the hospital network brass are talking about it, it is safe to assume someone up there has been in communication with Harrisburg because I have no doubt because we are a hospital system they could shut us back down if they didn't like it. May be light at the end of the tunnel?
They can open up whatever they want at this point the damage has been done. And once we're out of the tunnel we'll be facing a very bleak economic reality. Which in itself will pose a far bigger health risk than the Wuhan virus ever did. IMO, that is.

I agree, but the nation survived a depression before.

Like the economic reality was not yet bleak pre-covid19? The US economy is already years a ticking timebomb, it already triggered the 2008 worldwide financial crisis, maybe covid19 is the final push it needed to have it collapse beyond repair to have some opening their eyes? That the long await shift in world power is becoming a fact as we speak, maybe we should all start thinking out loud:

- maybe the american dream was a hoax?
- maybe the invisible hand does not exist?
- maybe the market is not always right?
- maybe, just maybe, we need huge economic reform going towards sustainable growth driven economy instead of an exploitation driven economy competing on lowest margin worldwide... just maybe it is about time to start listening to some non-populists? just maybe...

If you really want to go that route, you'd have to say that the world economy was a ticking time bomb. Fiat currency is hardly an American invention, or just an American reality.

As for "the shift in the world power" there will be none of that. The ones who already had an awful lot will have gained more while the rest will lose the little that they had and their serfdom will only become more unbearable.

Sure, the nation survived. But many families and businesses didn't. You're looking forward of 10-15 years of poverty everywhere around you, at best? I'm not.

Not to mention that moral fiber of that nation is nowhere to be found nowadays. Which will in turn make matters a lot worse.

And what to think about that absurd "Supreme Leader" who decides on his own to blame the WHO for the pandemic,
and stops its financial support?
Why doesn't he get hit by it, he is one of the most deserving creatures ever...

I know right? In early March he met with Brazil's president Bolsonaro and his staff, two of whom were later found positive for COVID. :O

Even the virus doesn't want him.

I agree and no I am not, I have been fearful for the nation for a number of years now prior to this. About two years ago I read an excellent comment which summed up the post 2001 or 2008 situation (whichever year you choose to belive): we are living in an insolvency papered over by liquidity. The economy hasn't been real for a number of years now.

What a crock of sh!t.
To have shuttered much of the economy because of a virus that is killing one or two a day is a radical error
Tell that "one or two a day" to Italy, Spain, USA. Even in Israel it's not one or two a day anymore.

Agree with dr_st. Since early March there has been a consensus among the experts that the only reasonable approach to the virus is "hammer and dance", i.e., hit it hard to get the numbers down so that you can control it by contact tracing, testing, and isolation. See these articles
https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavi ... e9337092b5
Meanwhile, in New Zealand, we appear to be on track to eliminate the virus within a few weeks (yesterday 3661 tests; 6 positive; update 4241 tests; 2 positive) and return to normal life a few weeks later.

Germany has a similar plan. Austria already eased the lockdown in Tirol IIRC... I guess few other EU countries may follow...

Except the former Eastern Europe ones (V4: Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary). All of them suffer from the raise of non-democratic process and dictatorship tendencies. Basically we're almost back to the Soviet era given the amount of (mostly stupid) restrictions, high penalties (400 Euro if you don't wear the face mask in a desert place, up to 110,000 Euro if you don't follow the quarantine orders), ruined economy and raising power of pro-Chinese/Russian populists. The government spreads fear and chaos instead of being helpful. It is going to be more scary every day as it reminds us of the old era :( The situation in Hungary is already known, but the rest of V4 countries is catching up.

There is apt description as "epidemiological Stalinism", when all the measures are exaggerated in the name of the war with the virus, but the reason behind is completely different.

And what to think about that absurd "Supreme Leader" who decides on his own to blame the WHO for the pandemic,
and stops its financial support?
Why doesn't he get hit by it, he is one of the most deserving creatures ever...
To be fair, much talk on that topic (Trump/covid19 management) is too biased...some Democratic governors (e.g. Cuomo) weren't fans of early measures either but have since turned aroud, and whatever Trump's failings on this were, governors around the country could have done better...
...I guess noone wanted to be blamed for the economic impact of lockdowns with presidential elections coming up...
...and after the s.hitstorm hit, the political management has turned towards who will pay the political cost for the loss of lives...

..and this is were the boogeyman enters...WHO, China...India especially and Australia are leading as well, with some others slowly catching up (France), as blame needs to be distributed around and especially abroad, for the failings of the health-system, which highlights social disparities...
part of the post-virus political game...deals will need to be renegotiated, power-balance recalibrated, voters must be steered towards supporting these moves (instead of looking to place the blame domestically)

Fox/CNN etc are all unbearable if one is a tad intellectually honest and/or doesn't come out of his shell/the political autopilot only when the party he/she supports loses...unfortunately Dems keep turning into more and more rightist versions of Reps, vote spoiling practiced all around, pushing the latter even more to the right, in order to create political identity groups/bases and the more extreme the discourse gets, the more it seeks to symbolically present shrinking political differences as chasms.
...1 Dem vote lost, would bring in 2 Rep votes was formerly the Dems "strategy"... worked out well...basically Trump is the legacy of the Obama years, not a disruption.

On a general note, every crisis is an opportunity whatever chaos it creates...tracking citizens, managing medical records, deregulating labour laws is part of what it's at stake...

The virus has had its first effect on me.

Instead of seeing my cardiologist for my annual checkup, it was done via video conferencing over my smartphone.

It was easy to set up and use, but not quite the same as being there. It took a lot less time though.

Yeah medical video conferencing has started to be practice over here as well. Hope it would be enough for me, but I need to run blood tests etc.

Truth is it's the worst time to visit a hospital; too many people just won't admit it to themselves that they might have the virus, and if both public and private testing (PCR) isn't available or too expensive, people will show up at hospitals and endanger other patients and doctors (worse still, cause they see many patients each day).
In these circumstances it should be the first thing one tests for, then the rest.

Still even with the most reliable PCR testing, you just can't be sure. A 35yo man died recently in my city, he had no underlying illnesses but his immune system failed very rapidly; was admitted last Wednesday to hospital with high fever, went into ICU on Saturday, late Sunday early Monday he died...
...and during this time 3 Covid19 tests were run on him...2 produced negative results and the very last one, taken in ICU, was positive, at the very last minute...

Effing messed up

This is terrible, what has happend to people? Our neighborhood country where people were used to visit each other for decades. And now this for no reason. The covid situation is exactly the same in both countries.

Im praying they can find a vaccine soon. I dont have a lot in my savings accounts and I fear that if this gets worse I might lose my job and money could be a problem. Im still grateful my situation isnt as bad.

And what to think about that absurd "Supreme Leader" who decides on his own to blame the WHO for the pandemic,
and stops its financial support?
Why doesn't he get hit by it, he is one of the most deserving creatures ever...
First, that was unacceptably mean spirited.

The WHO, no not the rock group, swore to the chicoms' lies for a couple months before it all blew up in their face.

In Jan Coumo was telling new yorkers to go out to parks, etc.

Then he and NJ and PA governors all FORCED nursing homes / LTC facilities to take in ALL patients regardless of CV19 status, prevented the facilities from testing new patients and now after some 20-30% of deaths there have been in NH / LTC facilities, are trying to deflect the blame.

All these moronic governors who order shut downs / lockdowns across the entire state when 80-90% of the state us FAR less densely populated than the 2 or 3 large cities in the state are just making it all worse.

FL has an average pop density close to that of NY (400 ppl / sqmi vs 412) and is actually the # 3 most populated state, passing NY some 10 years ago, yet FL has FAR fewer cases and deaths than FL even though the (mostly unconstitutional) restrictions are less severe here in FL than they are in NY. We didn't force NH / LTC to take in cv19 infected patients either and as a result have far fewer NH cases & deaths than NY / NJ.

China DELIBERATELY allowed this to spread AROUND THE WORLD when they completely shut off that cuty from ALL INTERNAL TRAVEL to other parts of china AS EARLY AS LATE OCT / EARLY NOV. but the ALLOWD INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL TO THE REST OF THE WORLD, thus sending hundreds of thousangs or persons from whuan to all over the world before Pres Trump and then other nations stiopped flights from china.

This is all the chicom's govt fault. But the who backed them up and swore to their lies.
