COBOL. Maybe you could make a few extra bucks. Anyone? I never got past FORTRAN, BASIC and ASSEMBLER.

There's a lot of unemployed people waiting on this.

I did COBOL programming or about 5 years back in the 2000s. Can't say I missed it.

This is sad, just sad.

I did my fare share of COBOL in the end of 80's/beginning of 90's... And everyone laughed saying this is a soon to be dead language...

This is hilarious. I graduated in 1975 as an EE and went to work programming in Fortran, CPM, MBasic, Pascal and other languages. The business applications were being written and maintained by non-engineer programmers who were programming in Cobol. We had a rivalry going on because anytime the Cobol programs had to output a numerical calculation the results were not very precise. I learned Cobol just to be able to give the programmers a hard time. Cobol is long in the tooth and should be a dead programming language.

I bet that many companies (mostly banks) today are still using programs that I wrote for them last century!
Overall I programmed in COBOL (and many other languages) for about 35 years, that's enough.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff). And pigs CAN fly!

We need to bring back Adm Grace Hopper!

She used to hand out "nanoseconds" strips of wire approx 11" long; the distance an electron can travel in one nanosecond. Her and Rickover were about the two oldest Admirals in the Navy until they were eventually "persuaded" to retire.

Just for the record, COBOL was one of the languages I learned in college and actually used at a couple of my jobs after school, but I don't think I'll go back to it, especially as a vol to a state that won't let me have my Garands & Carbines or M1911A1s

Ha! I (reluctantly) did COBOL for years - PL/I was superior in many ways but IBM-specific; ASM was fun but not really practical for application programming.

However I now have a business in an entirely different field so the pay would have to be $$$ to drag me away. Probably have to work remotely as well as I have had too many run-ins with border agents already and I don't need that hassle today, fer shure.

There are a LOT of older COBOL business systems still running, and our State accounting system still uses a front-end emulator to a IBM terminal 3270 system. Yikes. Hey, I did some FORTRAN, dabbled in PASCAL, and now am lucky if I can crayon....
2@ X120e's for fun, T430s/X220i/T420 running Win10.

Well it took months for the State of Ohio get their unemployment system up to speed to handle the volume and changes to the system. No thanks to all the old COBOL programmers out there!

Its like Y2K all over again.

You know many ATMs are still running a version of OS/2 so it can front end into the banks' big iron. And I'm not talking about mine & Bill's 472 CID Cadillac engines here.

I still have a MicroFocus COBOL compiler on my old T23 with Windows XP.
But I haven't used it in years.

I have an old MF-COBOL install as well, but it's been over 15 years since I used it. Probably closer to 25 years.

No battlestar galactica fans I guess...
